I just wondered if anybody out there could help me. I have recorded a wave into my computer from my turntables which varies in amplitude the whole way through (obviously some records are louder than others). What I want to be able to do is make a CD which has a constant volume level, without having to go through the whole wave selecting bit by bit and amplifying/attenuating bits at a time - this is what I have been doing so far, and I have ended up with exactly what I had in the first place - a wave which is all different levels.
Idealy, what I would like to do is find a program where you can select the whole wave, and just press go and let it adjust the levels for me. The programs I currently use to edit my waves are :-
Cool edit pro v1.1
Wavelab v4
I thought that NORMALISE was supposed to do what i'm talking about, but all it seems to do is amplify the selection, rather than bring the lower parts of the wave up to match the higher parts of the wave. Can anybody shed any light for me please??

If I understand your question correctly, here's how I do it.
In Cooledit you can go to Transform->Amplitude->Amplify and upper or lower the amplitude of the entire wave.
Make sure you first go to Analyze->Statistics to see how much db you can amplify before clipping.

What exactly are you trying to do? Make different albums have the same apparent loudness but keeping the integrity (loudness) of each track within an album, all the tracks in a particular album the same appr loudness or each track in a album as loud as possible, all the tracks from different albums as loud as possible (maxed out, compressed)? 😕 Do you mean like a compilation CD of tracks from different albums with the same apparent loudness?

Audiotools looks like it could be useful; it has plugins like a leveller which should help keep things, uh, level. I haven't tried it myself, but it just might be what I need to record the dozens of VHS HiFi recordings I've made of DJ sets at raves and parties.

I use Sound Forge 4.5 and CoolEdit95, both very old versions. I also use feurio! and Grove Mechanic for audio editing.
