Hi!
I’m currently feeding my LRS+ with a class D amplifier using a linear power supply. I have a pair of subs crossed over at 100hz with 100hz high pass filters on the Maggies. The company that manufactures the amp and power supply (Pro-Ject) is rather dodgy about publishing specs for the combo, but I think around 200-220 watts. They sound good, but history demands I remember the mid 90s when I auditioned an Aleph (was there a stereo model then?) 0 and it was the absolute best that system ever sounded. By far. I was then using a Counterpoint SA12 powering a pair of Scientific Fidelity Teslas (I adored them).
Today I’m running both a digital and analog front end with the venerable AES AE3 preamp with very lovely Sylvania 6SN7s and a Bugle Boy 5AR4 (all early 1960s).
So, having only a basic understanding of the difference between watts and amps, I’ve read that Maggies like all the “power” you can feed them. These being small Magnepans, there are limits to what they can do in terms of huge orchestral pieces, but they’re still fantastic. I only listen to classical about ten percent of the time. They are delicious with everything else I listen to.
Would the Aleph 0 monoblocks be able to adequately feed these speakers (4 ohms and 86db efficiency) in my 14x20 room (speakers along the long wall sitting roughly 8ft away and seven feet apart with 8’ ceiling)? The current amp gives me all the volume I need, but I’m not so convinced I’m getting the whole dynamic range. I believe the Aleph 0 spec is around 60 watts, but I also believe that number applies only to class A operation with a considerably higher A/B rating? As of now I can measure around a 95db level before things start to sound congested - especially on big scale pieces. At higher volume I get around 15-20db peaks in dynamic range depending on the recording (maxing out at around 25 with the right selection at very high resolution).
I wasn’t able to afford the Aleph 0 back in the day, but the prices today on used mono models puts them only slightly out of my comfort zone.
Also, due to the advancing age of these amplifiers, what spec caps would I be looking at for replacement (planning ahead)? Probably Jupiters in something this nice and likely not many options “better” than oem.
Thanks in advance for an undoubtedly overly complex simple question! ie will the Aleph 0 mono be a good option for Magnepan LRS+?
