Akai M-8 Amplifiers

Can anyone enlighten me as to why the amplifiers in the Akai M-8 tube powered reel to reel sell for aproximately the same amount as the whole unit intact?

I have noticed this and find it a bit puzzling. Do the amps make for good mono blocks for stereo listening, or what?

How many watts do they put out, (rms)?

Any info. will be appreciated.

Thank you, Tom

Tom,

Should you want the R2R and not the amps, you can have mine for free (well, +shipping). I'm not sure whether or not it worked, but they are reported to be fairly stout.

The amps are neat. They have a great reputation when left stock. There is some info about quick stand alone conversion in this Audio Karma thread. The chassis also affords a great deal of flexibility to implement other circuits. Not much room for big caps, and the OPT won't be the be-all-end-all, but they are great fun for the $$, especially for those of us that want to avoid lengthy chassis work.

I,'d like to thank you guys for the info. and the links to info.

Paul, thanks for the generous offer of the M-8. I will have to decline the offer though. I have two and they both need belts. I think I will pull the amps out of at least one of them and have some fun. The other, I am not sure if I will replace the belt or not.

I have several different RtoR's that I play with and am probably not going to keep the M-8 as an addition to my permanent collection.

I love this sight. People are very helpful and knowledgeable about all things audio.

Thank you all, Tom

They are very nice sounding amplifiers with quite versatile uses, especially in hi-bias mode. Iv seen that the amps cost as much as the whole unit, but now with the host of tube stuff out now it might be different. I wouldn’t intentionally salvage the amps out of a good unit? If one comes your way then by all means make use of it. There are so many good value tube guitar amps, hifi amps, preamps and kits about today to choose from. The thing about the M8 it’s got all the sockets on the front to connect things any way you like and you don’t find that with many things out today. The only negative things I can think of is the tone control is not too good and it maybe a little more noisier than what is out today.
