Hello Adrian, welcome back!
I would like to ask you a question.
I just picked up a well kept Akai GX 210D reel to reel.
Have all original items, box even.
Very clean. It came with service manual too.
Prior to sending tape thru it I plugged it in, hooked up the amp, power on.
There is a him seems like 60hrtz hum, when I toggle the tape selection switch the hum disappears.
Bad switch, bad cap in line or bad resistor?
I should mention the hum is only in the right channel.
Thanks for your time and input!
Cheers

I have never worked on an Akai reel to reel, only a few of their cassette decks and an amp.
As suggested, clean all switches and pots, inluding the record switch using a suitable spray with straw. I have encountered a Teac x1000 with a constant hum. It was the anti spark caps on the power switch. Beyond that it will need a re cap. Let us know how you get on.
