Advice on checking Transformer

Hi,

Firstly, please cut me some slack, the internals of hi fi kit is not my normal playground, but I do like problem solving, and I'm trying to keep my mind active during lockdown, AND before anyone says it, I am fully aware of the dangers of electricity and do not go beyond what I consider safe.

I have a fondness for Cambridge Azur 640h hi fi servers and have bought a few on Ebay to repair with reasonable success. They are basically a mini pc with a quality cd drive and proprietary software. Anyway one of them i'm playing with can't even get past first base and I don't seem to be getting power though to the motherboard.

So, my question....the power supply unit is a toroidal transformer which I'd like to try and check. It has the option for 240 or 110 volts. The transformer has marked up on it what the primary and secondary cable colours and voltages are, but they all have 3 cores! So the primary is identified as 115v/60hz and 230v/50hz, the cores are brown, blue and black. Can I assume that brown and black is 110 volt input and blue and black is 240 volt input (or vice versa).

Also again, there are three secondary outputs (16v, 15v and 7v) One is a twin connector. but the other two are 3 cable - green yellow green and white blue white. Which should I connect across to check the voltage...and why three?

Thanks

Alchad

There are several videos on checking transformers available.

Also, you can connect AC voltage to the input and use an o-scope to see the output.

There are also several tutorials online on how transformers work and what they are used for.

Do you have a schematic for the Cambridge Azur server? If so, what voltage(s) are you supposed to check for at what test point/location on the circuit you are troubleshooting?

Using safe troubleshooting procedures, you can answer your own questions. It's difficult to troubleshoot online with the sparse information you provided. Or, maybe you're looking for someone who has one of these servers and knows this information? Then you would probably be better off seeking your answer at a website that repair techs frequent?

I still have my vinyl collection mostly USA 50,s -Buddy Holly- etc etc along with do-wop -soul- Motown-blues etc .

Always thought the US could conquer the world on music alone .

Although I have original CD,s of most of them it just isn't the same to me --probably too nostalgic.

Can I assume that brown and black is 110 volt input and blue and black is 240 volt input (or vice versa).

The 240V should be the wires with the most resistance.

0V--wire--110V--wire--240V
R R =R+R

but the other two are 3 cable - green yellow green and white blue white.

Probably symmetrical supplies for op-amps. I would assume Yellow & Blue are the center taps for those two supplies.

Thanks for the replies......why didn't anyone say "you do know the output is AC don't you...."

So transformer is working, so presumably a problem with one of the circuit boards on the unit, above my paygrade to sort check those.
