Hey all, long time listener, first time caller. I just got an amazing deal on a pair of Polk RTA 11t's for $60. They are very nice speakers, but the bass is not up to my tastes. I have been thinking about the possiblity of adding a side firing sub into the existing speakers. Just thought I would get your opinion on this idea esp with the polk's bottem passive cones.
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
Mike there is not enough box volume there....but you have a good buy on the speakers.....a separate subwoofer would be appropriate

Need a sub ?
Mike,
We have all heard very good bass from single coned 7 inch speakers. I would think that your Polk ( the floor stander in the picture?) should be easily capable of producing good bass.
Maybe this is a great opportunity to work on the speaker and improve its performance. Change crossover , change stuffing , move location etc and try to 'make it work' rather than trying to add more drivers to it. If the second cone at the bottom is a passive radiator , maybe you could block it up and see if you get better bass from the single bass driver......etc.
Try to measure the TS parameters of the main bass driver and model it in the existing box and see what else you can do with it . There is lots of freeware and demo software on the Net to do this. There are even more DIYer's on the forum to help you.
Plenty of things you could do to try and get things the way you want. Discuss it , do it and report results on the forum. I am sure lots of guys would like to participate.
Have fun.

Re: Need a sub ?
Yes, you can either do the separate sub thing or do the above. If the above, could you start by giving us a good picture of what's going on? Cabinet schematic and measurements, driver descriptions, etc. Also, some general comments might be useful ... Does the cabinet vibrate much? Is it well braced? What's the overall performance of the speakers?
We have the technology. We can rebuild them.
