Adding a second transformer

Hi there,
I have several amps where I had to get a donor twin of to replace some parts so I also have quite a few duplicate transformers. I was wondering if it is possible and also if it makes sense to somehow squeeze a second transformer in for some amps or if it's a waste of time and copper.
Thanks for any thoughts.

Since you already have twin transformers, and if space allows it, it would be a nice idea to turn an amp to dual mono. Now about whether it's worth doing is a bit subjective, but i think you would definately gain better control at low frequency content, especially at higher power levels.

If you are doing it for improved sound quality (by stiffening the supply) it can’t hurt. Might not help much either - the effect of the supply is at *normal* listening levels is depends highly on the amp itself. It will almost always help the *sound* and increase output power when the amp is driven heavily into clipping - but may cause the amp to overheat when you do. The average supply voltage will stay higher under load, resulting in more output transistor dissipation. If the designer was counting on the supply voltage sag to save the output transistors at 4 ohms you will probably blow it out at 4 ohms.

I’d be using those spare transformers to build new projects. That’s where I get about half my transformers *from*. Burnt up amp = free, transformer $100. Drops $100 off the BOM cost of a project.
