I recently started a project of a 6 channel mixer controlled via usb and pc.
I adapted some software i got off the internet to do the PIC code and the pc code. During this time the PIC compiler got updated and completely screwed up the PIC software. So I rewrote it using Microchip C18 compiler.
All worked well on my pc in Win 7 and Win XP so I sold it on ebay.
The buyer rang me up saying the pc software wouldnt run on XP. I offered the usual fixes like "running as admin" but nothing worked. So to be sure I built another and tried it on XP and it didnt work ! What ever i did it wouldnt run on XP. So I rewrote it using C# instead of C++ and it started working ok again even on XP.
In a matter of two weeks Microsoft and Hi Tech made changes/updates to their compilers that stopped my software working.

It's a known symptom: if some software stops working on Windows it will be bought by Microsoft soon, or some replacement will be offered by Microsoft.

It wouldnt be so bad if the software told me why it wasnt working but to say "the software has encountered a problem and has to shutdown" is pretty useless lol Even the error log is meaningless.
Speaking of software tools, the most fundamental of which is the operating system, I want to say something about Windows 7; it is complete rubbish, slow, counter-intuitive, bewildering options and treats you like a complete imbecile. I won'tt say anything about Office 2010 because I don't have enough time to list everything wrong with this total cr@p.

But you have to admit that Windows 7 is a big improvement over Windows Vista! I had to reboot that piece of garbage every day or my computer would slow to a crawl...
