A Simple Question About Wire: Please Help

I'm about to start building a Pearl phono stage, my first DIY project, and have a handful of fairly simple questions.

First, wire. What kind of wire (i.e, what gauge) should be used: (a) To connect the unregulated supplies to the main boards? (b) To connect the input RCAs to the main board? (c) To connect the main board to the output jacks? (d) To implement the star grounding scheme, e.g., to connect the filter caps to the common point on the board? My real question here is: How do you decide what kind (gauge) wire to use in any given case? Surely there must be some rule for this.

The audiophile rule seems to be the lowest gauge (thickest wire)
you can fit. In reality, you can get away with quite fine wire,
and the middle ground (pun) would be about 22G for hot signal
traces, and 18G or 16G for power and ground.
