900W+ car PSU...

Hi All,

Just finished unpacking another box o' stuff and came across another incomplete but interesting project...

It's the fully functional power supply section of what used to be a Lanzar Vibe 250...this amp was allegedly good for ~1kw into 4ohms...I couldn't be bothered to fix the amp, so the board has all the small components of the amp still present, I will cut the amp section off if it's not needed...

Basically it's the original case with a pair of 37-0-37 volt (12.5v input) SMPS. Each SMPS has a 30A fuse, the amp was spec'ed at 250x2 / 4ohms, or 450x2 / 2ohms, 1kw bridged, so these are very high current supplies.

Each uses tl494 and 8 x IRFZ44 driving a ~2" toroid and multiplies the battery voltage by ~3. All the power supply FETs have been replaced, several of the output caps are new and each has been tested to >200w rms using a totally different offboard amp.

I'm willing to sell the whole shooting match for the price of the 16 mosfets...say $40 plus shipping.

I can do pictures if anyone needs 'em...

hmmm....

...well, I can only guess at what killed the amp, I bought it as part of a collection of dead amps.

I was interested enough to investigate the failure, figured out the amp part had died catastrophically, virtually all the semiconductors were fried etc. The amplifier while powerful was not particularly interesting from a technical perspective, very generic classAB...so it didn't get fixed...

The power supply was more interesting because it was the largest example of a tl494 SMPS I had ever seen, so I wanted to play with it...I fixed it and then hooked up a couple of different amp modules I had at home to see how it performed...I gave up trying at 2x200wRMS, it was powerful enough...

If someone wanted to use the case and PSU to make a custom car amp I was simply offering to remove the section of PCB that has no useful function at this point.

HTH
