6th order box - 1 vs 2 external ports.

I've been living with my subs for a little while now

and it seems that while they have plenty of "shake" at the very bottom end e.g 28-40Hz, they seem to lack "thump" at frequencies above this. The cone moves a lot but there is virtually no air movement in the port. I suppose it's because of the size of the box means the air inside gets compressed very little and so it doesn't really feel like getting pumped in and out of the port at medium freqencies so the whole thing behaves as if it were an infinite baffle.

What I want to do is convert them into 6th order systems by adding an extra box over the front of the driver and attach a suitable port. (Win ISD says I can get accepatble results) Now the question is: Should I allow the original port to vent to the open air, or should I let it vent into the addition front chamber? i.e. have the front chamber cover just the driver or the drive *and* the original port. This would mean that low frequencies would then have to come out of the new port. Whaddya think?
