3m 9850 Ohp

I just bought one of these off of Ebay for $400 (brand new they are $1500-$3000). I know I'm gonna get crap for spending so much, but this is the mother of all overheads. 575w MH, 11,000 lumens, a triplet lens, and an 11.2x11.2 inch stage area (big enough for a 15" panel). Anyone ever try one of these?

Does it really fit a 15" screen?

Hi Lifter,

Congratulations on the OHP. Very nice. Quick question, does it really fit a 15" screen? The staging area is defined as being 11.25". Do you intend of making modifications to be able to fit the whole sceen?

Exipnos.

Yeah no kidding. I had the highest bid for mine at $225 for most of the auction. My max bid was $405. During the last 10 seconds of the auction (http://cgi6.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=1925139284) 2 people bid the thing up to $401. I was lucky I still won it, but a bit dissapointed that I was spending $175 more than I anticipated.

But I wonder why the other one only went for $230. I think I got lucky because it was in the wrong category. Instead of the OHP category, it was in "Industrial Supplies" or something.

other alternatives

Hey guys,

Is it possible to buy something similar to this, like 9800 or 9700, and change the bulb to a MH one ?

Thanks.

Cause it's not easy to spot a 9850 on EBAY.

And it's the triplet lens that I really want.

Is it possible to get high quality triplet projection lens, high quality Fresnel lens and glass ? For cheap ?

I don't mind building my own enclosure.

Thanks.

A 15" screen means that it's 15 inches diagonal. I forgot Pythagorean's theorem (I was an Arts major), but I used Photoshop and figured out that the width of a 15" diagonal 3:4 screen is about 11.15". Look at a regual 8 1/2" x 11" piece of paper. That's very close to the size of a 15" screen. The only issue I'll have to deal with is the four corners covered up by the black plastic. I've got two things in mind:

1: Remove the covering. Someone here did it and it worked (of course I can't find the post cause I don't know what to search for).

2: Adjust the vertical size of the image so that is "squishes", giving me a widescreen image while fitting in between the corner covers (or whatever those are called).

Problem with #1 is that I believe those covers are there due to the nature of fresnel lenses. It's possible that any picture that would come through those corners may not focus w/ the rest of the image (why I think they're there in the first place), but I do remember someone having success removing them. I'll have to try it out.

Problem with #2 is that the LCD controller I plan buy (Spectrah ARV) may not allow size adjustments, although I may be able to work something out with software. However, any non-anamorphic image will be disproportionate with this solution. Anamorphic DVD's and widescreen HDTV broadcasts are 90% the reason why I want a projector, but I'd still like to play computer games, watch SDTV, etc. Other problems with #2 is that I'll be losing some resolution (w/ an UXGA panel, it'd still be a higher res than any manufactured projector) and that some LCD's dont' respond well when they rescale to awkward sizes.

Absoulute worst case scenario is that I have to use a 14" LCD or I have to crop the top and bottom ever so slightly.

Got it...I never thought about how screen size is actually calculated. So I guess for us unlucky folks out there that can not get our hands on a 9850 would have to settle for something else with a 11.25" stage area.

There's a Dukane MH projector w/ a triplet lens. I'm not sure what the stage area is though. I think all the 3M's in the 9000's have the 11.25" stage area. There's a few of those on ebay, but you'd have to replace the lamp and all.
