Found what I thought was a decent deal on 50 of the hard-to-find 2SK117Y JFET's (about $18) and ordered them up. They arrived today, and instead of being in the TO-92 case, they are TO-92L, which is strange. On top of that, a quick check of Idss on about 10 units shows variations from about 6.5mA to 21mA! (Specs for the 'Y' variant call for Idss between 1.2 and 3mA).
Any idea of what these might be? I'm ready to send them back to the seller unless I can come up with a use for them, but my gut instinct is to get rid of them as untrustworthy devices.
Pic below shows one of these K117's in the TO-92L case, with an authentic K117GR from Mike at Ampslab below it.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
21 mA ??? Can this be one 2SK117?
According to datasheet, the 2SK117 has got max 14 mA.
And this is the BL version.
If they do not cost too much, you could use them as CCS, current sources.
But so many as 50 .. even if price is not very high.
If they are not 2SK117 ... there is no guarantee they can take 50 Volt drain-source.
And who knows how much (or little) DRAIN-SOURCE voltage they actually can take.

Diode and meter test say they are an N-channel JFET.
Lineup...I'm with you on this one. If they aren't what they say they are, then what are they and can you trust them? I say 'no'.

got a friend with access to a curve tracer? they could check a couple and from the results, you might be better able to guess what device you really have ...
that's too bad, sorry for your pain ....

No curve tracer here...I'm simply going to contact the seller and tell them that I cannot trust these devices as I cannot determine what they truly are.
Ironically, the K117 is one of the rare Japanese parts that is the real deal under several different names.
As in KEC's KTK117, Samsung's KSK117, Fairchild's KSK117 edition comes in a TO92S(mall) package.
Either one costs pennies in each desired grade in these parts, the K117 is still a very popular component.
(well, not exactly rare, quite a few familiar numbers were second source manufactured in Korea in the 1990s, my parts drawers still contain some KTK146/KTJ73 and KTJ72 from that period)
A JFET in a Long Johns TO92 package smells like re-labelled Fairchild parts.

Yes, Echo
This is what I should do, too.
If you ordered 2SK117Y, it is 100% sure you did not get what you wanted.
If there is only one little chance to cancel this buy .. I would do it.
2SK117 is a nice N-JFET. Low noise and high 50Volt VDS.
You have mentioned www.ampslab.com
He has got a more normal price for the GR and BL class:
http://ampslab.com/components_fets.htm
... but at least you get what you should have for your money.
Who was the seller?
There are so many deals from Southeast Asia on Ebay that seem to be too good to be true, and this proves they probably are as well.
Our main concern are often sound quality, but what about safety? I don't want to see my house burnt down.

No eBay...

I'm working with them. We'll see what happens, but so far they are trying to tell me that 'they're fine, you should use them'. 🙄

Ampslab is too expensive for me.

There are even cheaper sources in Europe, but only for trade and not private customers. I never found them difficult to get, especially in GR and BL. Y is a bit more difficult, but I just bought 30 for pennies, as Jacco said. All original Toshibas.

€0.26 for 50-99 items is a very good price
https://www1.elfa.se/elfa~eu_en/b2b/start.do
elfa europe has got them for €0.722 för 25-99 items
Dalbani in UK has got both 2SK117GR and 2SK117BL
for €0.65
http://www.dalbani.co.uk/catalogue/product_details.php?id=5998
http://www.dalbani.co.uk/catalogue/product_details.php?id=5997
... and also one special 2SK117BL
2SK117BL (F) Pb-Free ''special order''
100+ price break £0.25 .. which should be €0.33
http://www.dalbani.co.uk/catalogue/product_details.php?id=32012

2SK117BL should be the 'best' variant,
according to John Curl we should go for JFET that has higher IDSS
😎

Depends on the application.
I have (used) all three grades.

Well, the 2SK117Y is very tough to find. But, I also just received 40 of the 2SK117GR from this guy on eBay: http://stores.shop.ebay.com/AudioWind__W0QQ_armrsZ1
I measured about 1/2 of them for Idss, and they all seem to be between 4 and 5mA. I believe these are authentic.
But if I needed the 'Y' variant again, I have no idea where I'd get them.
UT Source says they will refund the money for the bogus 2SK117Y parts if I cannot use them. I'll believe it when I see it.

Seems it was all my fault...the 2SK117Y comes in the TO-92L package, and apparently has no defineable specifications that I can discern. If I want a 2SK117 in a TO-92 package, I have to order the 2SK117GR.
Don't ask why the focus seems to be on the device package...my explanation that the package was NOT my primary objection, that the device does not meet published electrical specifiations, always seemed to go right over their head. No matter what I wrote, it always came back to the device package ('You want TO-92? You order 2SK117GR"
).
I give up. These devices are going in the trash, and I do not recommend dealing with these people (http://www.utsource.net). I'm only out $25, but it still chaps my a**.

I dare to disagree.
http://www.semicon.toshiba.co.jp/docs/datasheet/en/Transistor/2SK117_en_datasheet_071101.pdf
2SK117Y is TO92, 1.2-3mA Idss.
The photo shows 2 of the 30 2SK117Ys that I bought from a Japanese source. All were measured; max Idss 2.6mA, min 1.4mA.
They do exist, just very difficult to get.
