I am relatively new to diy audio. I have just built a 5.1 speaker system and learned a lot in the process. Now that this project is finished, I see the mistakes I made and I want to start a new project which would be 10 times better than my first try.
So here it is.
I want to build two bookshelf speakers. What I am aiming for is high sound quality and nice finish on the cabinets.
I first considered doing a 2-way speaker with a woofer and a tweeter.
Woofer: DAYTON RS-150T-8 (link)
Tweeter: TANG BAND 25-1719S (link)
But I wonder if I can have a good flat frequency response with only those 2 drivers or if I would also need a mid such as this one:
Mid: DAYTON RS52AN-8 (link)
One way or the other what should be my crossover points and should I go with a 6dB or 12dB roll off?

I think that you would be ok with just those two drivers, better off even. I'd shoot for a 2k crossover point but I don't think that theres any way you can get around putting a zoebel network for the high end response of that woofer. That said I wouldn't necessarily jump at putting these two drivers together myself, but I think it's more than worth a shot. Look at it this way....if it goes bad then you will have to learn what went wrong....if it goes perfectly you will just have wonder what went right.
3-way of course - it has many benefits over the 2-way and two drawbacks - price and crossover design. If this is your first diy try, I would suggest to pick up a project that already works, Troels`s website has a lot of them with good drivers, Zaph also has some and I think he had a 3-way with the Dayton drivers. You may want to check them.
2k for the Dayton woofer looks over its usable range, it has several peaks which would make the crossover an issue. Looking at the massive cone resonanse at 10Khz - I may go for a 4th order not over 1.4Khz. You will need a notch and imp. correction as well.
If going to a 2-way - http://zaphaudio.com/SR71.html this one looks very promising ( I have not heard it, neither I have played with the reed cones ).
