2” dome midrange? Using in a smaller 3-Way

I have a pair of Jaycar dome midrange here that I have never had success with. Tried to sell them a couple of times with no luck, even gave them away to have them returned. But others have used them with success so I have been doing something very wrong.
So if I can't give them away or sell them I'd like to have another attempt at using them. This time rather than use the Jaycar woofer used in my last attempt I thought I'd use a Vifa M-22
This Jaycar dome is essentially the same as the Dayton
Dayton Audio DC50FA-8 Classic Series 2" Dome Midrange

and which I disparage in this old thread
JC-50 3 ways by Jaycar
I guess I know a little more now than I knew then so it will be the builder and not the driver
My first attempt was using the cross-over values developed by Jaycar and the others were Bi-Amping using a Super-X Pro.
I think a lot of the problems were trying to mate a big polycone 10" woofer to the small driver but perhaps also some time issues due to not recessing the dome into a thicker baffle but also I always thought a XO frequency of 600Hz is too high and I'd like to drop it down by at least 100Hz because my spec sheet for the Vifa woofer says that 400 to 500Hz is optimum for the M-22
DSP or EXO is not an option with this speaker, it will be gifted to my sister for her new house and I will need to supply her with an amp etc

You want to use a 2" dome (Xmax = 1mm) with an 8" woofer? Good luck with that.
I'd be more inclined to a 6" woofer that can get up to 6 - 700Hz.

Well there are many [ older I admit] 10 inch 2-way speakers out there. I don't have any good 6" but I do own a pair of M-22s and the Vifa driver is very smooth at the bottom end
They are the M22WR-09-06
I'm hoping they would be a better match than the old 10inch Jaycar woofers the Jaycar crossover was designed for

I wasn't thinking of a waveguide as such kazap but I was thinking of setting it back 25mm and rounding off the edge of the hole My finishing skills aren't really up to the task of making a waveguide to suit but perhaps the extra work isn't justified by the results.
I really did not like the Vifa19mm polydome tweeter that was normally used with this dome mid, I'll be happy to spend a few dollars for something smoother

2" dome mids usually measure well and without issues crossed over at 700 Hz or so, 3rd order electrical HP to account for the Z offset in regard to woofer, both assumed on a flat baffle. Mine are Dynaudio D52AF, crossed at 650 Hz, woofer being 24W75. Vifa may be a bit tricky to LP in this range but you can't tell for sure unless you try to model first. I would not expect top results without measurements.

A 2" dome midrange is often used for improved Center-to-Center spacing, and improved directivity control to 0.75" dome tweeters. These small diameter dome tweeters can generate a 20kHZ+ frequency response with 180 degree directivity. "light up the room" sound

Hi Moondog, - great minds, I'm wiring up a 3 way with Beyma dome mid this weekend.... lets bring them back into fashion 🙂
Looking at the Dayton impedance graph, my inclination would be to cross it over higher than 500,
but perhaps you will get away with it if you can flatten the resonance bump as they've done here:

(Sorry, it's in German, but just translate a couple of key words & it all becomes clear...)
cheers,

I had excellent results 11-12 years ago with a Scan Speak 22W/8857-T00 woofer, the MDM55 dome midrange and a Fountek Neo CD 1.0 ribbon tweeter. Woofer crossed to mid at 750 Hz, and mid crossed to tweeter at 4.8 kHz.

Not the same dome mid, but I've had experience with a 3-way using an 8-inch woofer, a dome midrange (Morel MDM-55) and a 1-inch dome tweeter. Resulting combination was quite good, IMHO.
