I’m so keen to learn this stuff 😉
I know there’s a ton of factors but is there any advantages in going more layers?
Say you have exactly the same subwoofer but the only difference is the layer count....oh and (maybe the gap size to fit the extra layers too)
My research has come up with that the lower the count is slightly better? Is that misinformation???? Which is confusing as there are a lot of 8 layer coils around.
Does 8 layers help with coiling?
Does 8 layers help with power handling?
Does 8 layers help give off more magnetic force?
I know it depends or heaps like coil material, gauge, winding height, diameter, motor strength, gap width etc….
but then 8layers gives more weight.
But then some say 8 layer coils you can have a smaller box volume in allot of cases?? Good for car audio?
Cheers

Increasing layer count is messy, they do not exactly stack up, and gap free space is STRICTLY limited.
So 2 layers is fine, at least it´s the easiest and most practical way to do it, so it rules 99.999% of speakers out there.
We are talking round copper wire of course, easiest to manufacture (so cheapest by a wide margin) and easiest to wind.
4 layers is a cheesy way to increase power handling and *maybe* increase BL , remember a doubled gap means a MUCH reduced very lossy flux, necesitating huge magnets for actually very small flux increase if at all.
I cringe seeing such monster magnets providing such a poor efficiency.
Never saw 8 layers but it borders on ridiculous.
There is a MUCH BETTER way to efficiently fill the gap, which is to use edgewound rectangular wire, copper or aluminum, but it´s expensive and requires Technology so you will not see that in the cheesy Car Audio market which mainly focuses on Macho Man looking speakers or "futuristic" looking designs.

Taking in account the low quality of most of the car audio systems, no one will detect any difference. Definitively, to listen cumbia villera bien cuadradita, any speaker will do the job excellently.

Well I
have some old CerwinVega 15" car subwoofers, they actually had small but strong magnets and edgewound ribbon coils 🙂
But you are right about that whats going on. Big magnets/motors, huge xmax and ridiculous suspensions are the main things that sells. No one cares about efficiency because amplifier power is cheap. All they want is low and loud, lots of air movement - thats the car audio marketing today, not sound quality.

Thankyuou so much for your reply’s, yes there’s a lot of 8 layer coils around mainly as replacement parts(speaker building) but there are some subwoofers around with 8 layers as factory standard.
Yes agree it is very hard to get close to quality of a hifi system when you have so many factors of the car that are hard to get around especially playing at a decent volume haha panel vibration.
But a lot of people especially when loud are all about looks and slamming as much power into the driver as they can redlining the thermals and xmax……… sound quality flies out the window real quick OR more like that it wasn’t there to start with haha
Just curious why you would choose an 8layer over a 4layer or 2???
Couple of 8layer coils down below
