18" Folded Horn Enclosure
I realize the idea is overkill from the start, but I recently acquired an 18" resonant engineering sub with about 3" of excursion and 5000 rms 10,000 peak power handling in good condition for dirt cheap. I've built many boxes, and the idea of building a folded horn enclosure interests me becuase I dj a bit. I basically want to put a premium EAW club folded horn to shame. I don't have too much to invest in amps, but I was going to power it by a Behringer Europower 2500 which puts out 2400 watts at 1.0% THD at 1khz. I've already got crossovers etc. sorted out. But, I can't find any design software for my mac or any plans to accomodate my specs. I basically want a design that can fit through a doorway, be carried by less than 4 people and damage foundations and windows while still retaining a shred of sound quality. I'm looking to cap frequency response at about 150 Hz and get it to hit as low as possible. Does anybody have any suggesstions or leads or suitable designs?

Whats the driver model?
Do you have T/S specs?
Im not sure about the suitability of horn loading these drivers...
Heres a link to 18" horns

Hi,
personally I would recommend you building a LAB project. I've forgotten the web address, but hey, just search around and you'll find it, there were some posts about that LAB horn. Does anybody remember the address?

I dont think bills designs include any 18" woofers.
You could get some one to custom design you one, that is modular consisting of a ~750litre basshorn,+ a large flare extender.
Your looking at 1000litre + enclosures here. Id reccomend an F3 near 32hz if its possible since you seem abit bass crazy😉
I dont know how to run HORNRESP on a mac,so Id reccomend you correspond with some one who has a PC.
Your other option is to sell it,and get a few 15"s of good repute,to put on a large horn.
is it the XXX ?

I do appologize for my inactivity. My house got robbed and my computer went missing along with all of my video game systems, a small tv and all the liquor except for the gin. All of the high end audio and turntables remained though, so I'm not too broken up about things. Here's the details on the woofer:
It's a Resonant Engineering MT series 18 inch
There's not really any real specs listed for it that I could find and they could be all off anyway because this one was a prototype. The main problem is that the woofer is designed for SPL and RE does not have any specs of that nature on their site.
BL: 37-49 depending on coil configuration
.25 cuft displacement
10.75" mounting depth
That's it on any sort of specs - I tried calling the company but they weren't open for business at the time.
thanks for your input

Sorry to hear about your stuff. Atleast they left the most important right?
Are you sure about the BL rating ? Thats ALOT
I think you really should call them again for the specs.
You will need to do some measurements to be able to calculate some of the Thiele and small parameters if you cant get the specs. Do a search and find out how to do that. Something with putting some weigt on the cone and measuring freq. of resonance and defrlection. I have not done it yet.
You could just use a design but i doubt it will be comparable to putting a little more effort into it.
Succes

Hi,
is it a bass horn you want 30Hz to 150Hz?
or
A sub bass horn 15-20Hz to 150Hz?
the first will fit through a doorway if you keep it between 1m^3 and 1.5m^3. I think a target of 750litres might be a little low for 18inch AND good performance.
The sub-bass will almost certainly not fit through a 850mm doorway if you want good performance at the low end. It will need a long horn to give the flare rate and it will need a big mouth to give a smooth response. Combine these requirements and it will be BIG.
Go ahead and measure the Thiele Small parameters.

Sounds like a cool project. You could always make the box modular so it can be disassembled in blocks and reassembled at the site where you perform. Then, just 2 guys could carry the pieces, easily assemble it and disassemble it and it would fit through any doorway (in pieces) It IS doable and would work just fine. You will have to figure out the specific logistics. Just a thought...... I know how musicians are with how much stuff they want to carry, I can only imagine DJ's are the same BUT, it would solve your problem and make a kick-*** box!
Chris
Just think of it... You could be the first kid on your block to have a modular, folded horn, sub box, with an 18 in. woofer!!!!!!😀

The BL specs are accurate. I just double checked again. The magnet structure is roughly three inches deep and over 9 inches in diameter. Everything on this sub is flat out overkill. The manufacturer's site is http://www.reaudio.com/
I'll work on getting out some T/S parameters within a week.
I do like the idea of making the box modular. That never really crossed my mind.

I had a look at that site and I'm a little confused as to why in the bass horn designs he adds the "corner effect" mouth extension as another horn segment, doesn't the 0.5pi setting in hornresp already allow for corner loading?
Hi Volenti,
yes the 0.5Pi loading accounts for the corner.
If you set up the horn pointing into the corner the shape of the walls mimics an extension to both the horn length and horn mouth area.
For the corner extension trick to work well the horn mouth needs to be about the same height as the room height i.e. stack two or three horns on top of each other to bring the total speaker (mouth) height up to match the ceiling to floor as close as possible.
