15.4" WUXGA with HD-8 lens Projector
After visit this DiyAudio.com frequently, finally I'm planing built 15.4" WUXGA Projector with USPL HD-8B lens.
I already bought as follows.
1. LCD Panel
SAMSUNG 15.4" WUXGA (1920x1200) from Korea parts surplus company at U$220.00
2. Lens
USPL HD-8B lens from ebay at U$50.00+U$72.5(delivery to Hong Kong)=U$122.5
3. WUXGA controll board (A/D board) from Korea company.
It will tune with Samsung WUXGA Panel, already done, Nextweek I'll collect it.
4. Fresnel lens
FL 330mm & 220mm
5. Light bulb
** May I use stick shape Fluorescent light (Energy saving type, they claim that it can be 8times efficiency than the normal) for this, 37Wx5pcs or 10pcs without Fresnel lens behind the LCD Panel. My humble opinion, it can ber save space and heating problems. but I'm not sure brightness whether it is enough or not.
6. Box
I would like to use multylayer(maybe 25 layer) 10t aluminum.
I would appreciate if you guys give me better idea on it.
Thanks in advance.

I dont think your lighting setup will work. You need a point light source and a few more lumens then what the fluorescent lights will give. I would look for a 400w MH or ushio conversion HPS.
Wow what a lens! Do you know that specs on the lens or if anyone else has used it in a diy projector?
Im also interested in the lcd controller setup you have. Is the lcd out of a laptop like the dell's? What about the controller? I would interested in one if its possible to order one still. More info would be great and much appreciated. Good luck with your projector project.
Sounds like an awesome project keep us updated.

If the lense is what i think it is, then it is from a projection tv. Which will not be suitable for the size of lcd panel you have.

Dear ukaqr,
Thanks for your comments,
Yes, you almost reach to right answer, but This lens was used for Barco 808 projector. or similar product which is using 8" RCA Tube.
As for the result, I'll try first. anyway. later I'll show you the result how poor or how fantastic.
Happy DIY.

This lens will never work with a 15" panel.
1) The focal length is far too short . (probably about 8" as it was used for a 8"CRT Tube)
2) This lenses are not achromatic also, because there are usually 3 of them. So you will have really bad chromatic aberration.
3) If you are really unlucky there is also a build in color coating.
Best thing you can do is to sell it on ebay.

---> Yes, I checked FL is about 20cm.
2) This lenses are not achromatic also, because there are usually 3 of them. So you will have really bad chromatic aberration.
---> Lens structure of HD-8B, but I don't have any idea about achromatic, can you give me some opinion after see the lens structure as attached.
3) If you are really unlucky there is also a build in color coating.
---> Fortunately It does not have color coating.
Best thing you can do is to sell it on ebay.

Anybody there, please help me, I really really would like to hear objection opinion to qaming247,
Please help me, I don't want to screwup my big projector project.

From the lens structure you posted it could be achromatic, but it is hard to tell.
Biggest problem IMO is still the focal length.
Another problem is that AFAIK CRT Tubes aren´t flat and so the lenses aren´t built for a flat surface like a LCD.
My first projector had a Delta 2 CRT Tube and a 3,5 " Display and i could only focus in the middle or at the edge.
But as you already have purchased the lens you can try it out anyway.

Re: 15.4" WUXGA with HD-8 lens Projector
1. Great LCD panel, but it is too big for your lens.
2. The lens may be a problem. Projection TV lenses are designed to have the source (CRT) within 20mm of the rear of the lens. This is so the lens can collect all of the light from the source and project it. That limits the size of the LCD.
3. Good controller, hope it works well.
4. Won't need the fresnel lenses with that projection lens or with Fluorescent bulbs. Fresnels are used with point light sources.
5. Flourescent bulbs will deliver enough lumens only if they are in a total reflector box. It has to be a mirrored box with an opening for the light to go through the LCD only. In other words, it is a box made of mirrors that the bulbs are mounted in, and one side of the box is the LCD. The box has no other openings.
6. The projector enclosure box can be almost anything you want it to be.
If you want to use the 15.4 inch WUXGA LCD, you have to get a different projection lens.
