wsin jaycar the other day and was ooking at the 12" version of the XL seres and it looked like a real beast, i pushed on the cone and it really moved a decent way, anyway my suggestionis to get the 12" version and get a plate amp from wes components, they sell a 200w for but 250, it just doesnt have binding posts but i think the drop in price is well worth that sacrifice.

Ben,

I have yet to hear a Jaycar sub that I thought was suitable for music. I think you get better quality and value if you look at some other drivers, which include:

Adire Shiva ($300 at Acoustic Visions)
Peerless XLS 10" or 12" (190/220)
Peerless CSX 10" (97.50 at Wes trade price)

Don't be fooled by the large surrounds on the Jaycar subs - some of them have no more excursion cability than my Vifa 6.5" drivers!!! Their bark is worse than their bite. Their most expensive subs are bigger and more expensive than the Shiva, but none of them can match the quality or output. These drivers only have two advantages:

1. you can hear them at the shop
2. more attention is paid to their appearance

For subs available in Australia, I'd look at Adire or Peerless. I can't say that I have heard the CSX, but I have heard good things about it, and it has a motor designed for low distortion, a rare feature in a sub at this price point.

regards,
Paul

The CSX is rated at 200 watts rms, its thermal rating. Not sure about how much to use its xmax, however that will depend on the box and alignment. I'd say at least go with the Jaycar 150watt rms (100 into 8 ohms). The 240 watt amp will give you extra headroom and the 350 watt amp will probably have more power than you would need, although the remote is a handy feature.

The plate amps available at Wes Components are cheaper. The 200 watt version is cheaper than the jaycar 100 watt amp (both into 8 ohms).

I haven't used any of these amps, I have a hifi power amp, but they are generally recommended.

regards,
Paul

definately go the ported, it will provide much higher output and lower response. my box is 100L and tuned to 24Hz, more was done today and now i just need to screw in the driver and glue the port in to do some testing.
ill order my plate amp in a few days when i get paid next. i will simply cut a hole in the back with a jigsaw and slap the amp in.
ill be happy to run you through the project if you decide to undertake it.
