Hello All,
Cleaning out my garage to make room for a treadmill and a place to roll around on a swiss ball.
There are boxes of mostly JBL drivers that need to go. I may sell some along the way.
For entertainment I am planning a pair of 1 to 2 cubic foot speakers attached to the storage loft above.
There are more than a few options, the speakers likely will be 2-way with 12" woofers plus Compression Drivers / wave guides attached.
In the storage boxes there are 2204H, 2206H and 2217H (a 14 inch driver). I am leaning towards the 2204H's, they model a little lower in frequency response.
For the CD's there are several options, I am liking the 2453 SL mounted with the Progressive Transition 6-1/2" X 12" 90 X 50 wave guides.
Any thoughts or ideas?
Thanks DT

Thanks Rob,
At what frequency do you crossover to the JBL2453SL's.
I plan to use a Rane AC22 Crossover to adjust the crossover frequency to see what sounds good to my taste.
Thanks DT

Hello DT
I cross them at 1.5K 24dB active crossover. They are in a 4 way so the driver below is a 2123 10". You should have no issue at all say 1K or a little lower if needed depending on the upper response of the 2204. I posted a measurement which shows the extension even on the 1010 you might get better loading on your waveguide. In case you don't have it I attached the driver PDF. Unfortunately we don't have an actual measurement on the LH site.
Rob 🙂

You can probably get a fair dollar for the 2217s. I use a pair of them along with the well regarded, but now unobtanium, QSC 17" x10" waveguide and Radian 650 CDs. The 2217s are very nice out to ~1kHz, but they don't go very deep without some help. I use a sealed cabinet and a generous shelf to raise the F3 to about 40Hz (I use a DSP XO). Even at "call the cops" volume the 2217s don't complain. But they are probably overkill for a garage speaker. Sell the 2217s and use either of the other two woofers.
I was disappointed yesterday, Friday. The big Brown truck was delayed. The 2453SL diaphragms that were expected will not be delivered until next week.
So I installed the 2453J CD on a 1010 waveguide that was sitting on the shelf, then ran a few plots including Impedance. This CD on the 1010 waveguide is really loud, SPL wise, at just 1 volt input.
The impedance curve with no filtering or processing shows what looks like a lot of wobbly diaphragm breakup in the top half octave.

My bench with a 2451SL opened up.
Thanks DT

Hello DT
Glad you posted your Imp plot. Looks very similar to the SL plot's I have also on a PTH1010. There is a difference up above 10K the SL's look better damped and the peaks look lower in amplitude. Curious to see if your SL measurement shows the same thing.

A funny peculiar thing happened today the package expected from reconingspeakers.com arrived unexpectedly by way of the post office.
Looked at my UPS page and the package is still scheduled to be delivered on Monday.
I installed the new 2453 HSL diaphragm, it comes as one piece attached to a new rear cap for the Compression Driver.
I ran a couple of Rub Buzz sweeps, everything checks out okay.
See the attached impedance sweep and a couple of other plots.
The new diaphragm and Voice Coil is the H or 8 Ohm version.
The new diaphragm / Voice coil has less wobbly wiggly stuff going on above 15kHz, better than the J or 16 Ohm version but still wobbly wiggly to a lesser degree. We will see how the Frequency Response looks.
Looking back at the plots of the JBL 2451 without the SL coating vs the 2451 diaphragm with the SL coating there was a bigger difference with the SL version. The 2451 has a larger mounting bolt circle, attaching the waveguide to the 2451 CD will be a bit more problematic.
