Hi All,
I have a pair of Linn Kan Mk1 speakers from new (1982)
The rubber surrounds have torn and obviously the sound is not as it should be. I finally bit the bullet and opened them up.
I successfully removed the drivers, but I am at a loss of how to remove the rubber suspension from the cone.
I have tried a small amount of IPA but it removes the glossy coating on the cone.
Does anyone have an idea of how to do this?

As far as I know KEF, used PVA glue for both peripheral surrounds and center cap. It is water based. Dissolving PVA can be accomplished using one of these methods :
- Vinegar :
- Soak a cloth in white vinegar.
- Apply to the glue area and let it sit for 15–30 minutes.
- The acid can help break down the polymer bonds.
- Then scrape or rub off the residue.
- Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol, 70–90%):
- Effective on tougher, dried glue.
- Dab alcohol on the glue and let it sit for a few minutes.
- Then gently rub or peel off the softened glue.
- Acetone :
- Stronger solvent; can dissolve PVA.
- Use with caution—it can damage plastics, paints, or finishes.
- Test on a small area first.
The glossy coating on the Bextrene cones is diluted PVA brushed on after assembly.
Time and patience with warm water/vinegar is probably your best option.

Fluids, such as acetone will dissolve bextrene which is a based on modified styrene. There is also an ageing problem with this material which results in the cone softening or splitting. Perhaps a replacement speaker may prove to be a better option. Look up Falcon Acoustics in the U.K.
Thank you all for the responses. My first attempt was with IPA but it started to remove the glossy coating, made no impression on the rubber attachment.
I did look at the matched pair from Falcon, but for me here in South Africa the price is a bit steep. Still need to add courier and tax to that 😬
I will keep trying, but until I get it right, I can't order the new rubber surrounds.
