"Torpedo" headphone amp clone build + streamer in one

Not a real clone. But using the same tubes. E90CC.

My son lives in a small apartment and bought Sennheisser HD600 headphones. So I thought why not build him a tube based headphone amp that has a streamer so he can stream Spotify via Airplay.

Chassis Ikea bamboo with aluminium top plate.

DurioSound Pro/Raspberry pi zero 2W/Volumio. So only Airplay...but that's fine. My son has an Iphone.

No grid stoppers. Transformer 250VAC. Schottky UJ3D1202TS 10uF->470R->300uF. 60VDC on plates. Sounds reaaally sweet. And not a hiss, humm or any noise from 0 to max volume. Uncanny. 😀

The Double Decker 'system' is horrible. Wires coming through..if anything needs fixing...you have to unsolder everything. Not doing that again.

RCA out so it can be used as a mediaplayer/preamp.

Hi Bas Horneman,

I really like your headphone amp project and wanted to build one for my self. Could you please give me the BOM list and voltage guide of your headphone amp. Thanking you in advance for this project!

Binh

Hi Binh,

The output transformers are unobtainium. But since it was speed job. I just set the current for 7mA. Turns out the voltage on the plate was 67VDC. So I you get there ballpark you are ok. Choke or CCS.

So your power supply needs to be good if you go for resistor or choke.

I used CCS. And in my case I used a 250vac transformer. Schottkey high voltage diodes. 10uF->470R->300uF-CCS.

As described SIC diode bias..part number in the schematic.

But really it all depends how you want to make this. OTL../Parafeed/Series feed. Your headphones should dictate which type.

Kind regards,
Bas

Not that I can think of. Apart from some more inputs and switching.

And to be safe. Add a 1/2 meg or 1mega ohm resistor grid leak r10/11. In case the potentiometer goes kaput. You might also want to use a grid stopper r12/r13...but not needed as far as I could determine.

Below one of the real Torpedo schematics as an example.
