As I posted here I would like to improve 5.1 to be superior to atmos. One part of that is to steer channels like DPL2 did. I would like to detect which of 8 channels has the highest voltage, and switch a relay to boost the gain for that channel.
I know a microcontroller can do it, but it's slow. How can it be done with electronics?

As far as I can see, what you want to do (boost the currently active channel) is what DPL does. You may refer to Section 2.5 of the DPL white paper by Dolby Labs themselves (attached) for more detail.
Note: You may have to feed the DPL with your own processed signals to achieve the result.
