Im not sure if I can get help here or not for this one. The factory radios in these cars have 3 external amps and a control box. That and, its especially important that this particular car Im working on stays with the factory radio.
AM/FM radio works so I know the unit works. I don't have a tape to test the tape deck.
The CD player had some issues that I worked through like a stuck load motor, dirty potentiometers, wiped the laser eye with 91% alcohol, etc..
Now I can get it to pull in audio CDs, and it will spins a bit at different speeds but it doesn't play. Eventually it ejects the disc. I tried multiple discs - CDR, real CDs, clean, scratched ones; nothing but spin and spit out.
Here is a good link with a BUNCH of photos on Page 1 AND Page 2. I already did what the link said but about the player skipping, but Im not even getting to that point at all as I have no audio. Its like the laser is just not operating.

Our 2001 4runner has a cassette player, was surprised they did that since all our tapes had worn-out ten years earlier. The CD player still works fine in that vehicle, but my ‘92 Lexus never played CDs without skipping from a low amount of miles.
If you can’t fix it, maybe some parts from the newer versions would work.
The Lexus later had issues that I suspect may had been old electrolytic capacitors in the ECU, might be worth checking out perhaps.

Some CD players are owned by people who think the 'car scene' on Up In Smoke were amateurs. When they're contaminated with smoke, you can sometimes get one cleaning but after that, it's done because you can't get to the prism and other optical surfaces to clean them.
If it had a Sony mechanism/laser the nylon suspension could have collapsed. For those, you could (for testing) position the mechanism so that the laser lens assembly was hanging from its suspension and they would often play. That would let you know that a laser pickup replacement would likely be needed (no circuit problems).
If the owner has pockets as deep as Musk, United Radio in NY may be able to help.

Haha, our 2005 RX400 still came with Tape/CD, and probably the whole series (up to 2008 or so). Had to exchange it with a newer model, as the CD drive failed. Now it's using a RHD device, with the volume button on the "wrong side". Luckily, it's not dongled. Our 2001 4runner has a cassette player
The MR2 mechanism is likely used in other japanese radios of that time (and I would just replace the CD mechanism if possible), but that is highly specialized knowledge, maybe ask some japanese car club what model to look out for.
