You will notice that in direct mode not only the tone control, balance and loudness are disabled but also the adapter
in- and outputs on the back of the amp.
First check the switch and the bridges on the in- and outputs.

Try another input, adpt tape 3 has a seperate switch not on the selector.
My Pioneer a702 also has a problem with the input selector, not with the sound but sometimes it won't select the input and no output at all.

The switch is the 'Direct' switch.
Some models don't have the adapter in- and outputs on the back, so if your's hasn't ignore that step.
