JBL k2S9800 vs Troels Gravesen The loudspeaker 3

Hi,

Can I have some opinions here please. I've seen a used pair of JBL k2S9800 speakers for sale for a similar price as what it would cost me to build Troels TL3. I've heard the JBL speaker at a hifi show a few years ago with Mcintosh electronics and it sounded fantastic, although there was ever so slight a bit of high end sharpness that I might find irritating long term.

I like TL3 for the speaker attenuation and the hypex amp, but how would they compare. Would TL3 be in the same league as the JBL?

My experience with both JBL and Troels G. is at best, and outside perspective. What I can say however is that the sharpness that you speak of is some of what I remember about JBL in general terms. I would also say that I really enjoyed the sound of my JBL 4343 for years. Many years later, I built a set of TG speakers for a customer, and the sound in that case was much less peakiness if any in the highs and force in the midbass, which I also enjoyed while breaking them in. As I said these two comparisons are way out on the edge concerning the question that you raised, but I will say this in addition>>> With the TL design complete with amp for power, it is the direction that I would want to go, and of course anytime that I can have a hand in the process like building the cabinets myself, the answer steers itself.
Given new technology ever changing, we can't always assume that price wins out for performance. The JBL's that I owned were quite a lot more expensive than the TG (because of the saving on labor, but not so much as you might think). In the end I would be owning the TG in a heartbeat.
