Hi Folks,
A few years back I inherited a Yamaha CDX-410. Until recently it's been in storage but from what I can remember it had a sticky drawer when I got it but in spite of this it still worked. I'd like to save it from e-waste and get it working again.
After opening it up, i can see that it definitely needs a new belt for the tray as it's quite slack and has lost its tension. However, I also noticed that when I put a CD in and tried to play it, it's not spinning. So I'm thinking that the belt for the laser probably needs replacing too? I just want to check that the lack of spin is possibly/probably being caused by the belt not moving the laser into position?
This is guesswork on my part as I don't have the service manual.
Any advice or suggestions related to this is welcome.
Cheers,
Chris

Firstly you must learn about how and what the system does to get the disk to spin.
1/ insert disk.
2/ system will place laser in home position.
3/ try to achieve focus ... no focus means no spin up as the system thinks there is no disk in the tray. Here is a clue!
4/ when focus is achieved, spin the disk and read TOC.
5/ display TOC and wait for command or play first track.
NEVER adjust the laser power without the YEDS7 disk and laser power meter.

The tray has to go in, and the tray motor has lift the CD to a certain height. Your belt may have enough tension to close the tray, but not lift the CD table. Maybe try a smaller sized one?
I've ordered a couple of new belts as I'm pretty sure the current ones have lost tension. I'll give an update once I've fitted them.
Back again!
The belts arrived yesterday and I've replaced the existing ones. Both belts were intact but had hardened so I don't think they were working properly.
I was hoping this would fix the unit however there are still problems:
When I put a CD in, the draw closes as expected, however the disc doesn't spin, and the draw then opens.
So I'm thinking that I'm still stuck at Step 2 (see above).

I believe I owned a similar model if not exactly the same. It was an early unit and I found a problem in that CD's had evolved to be physically too large and were contacting a hinge action of the tray. I had to shave away some plastic in a precise spot to allow certain CD's to spin freely.
The player is not detecting that the CD tray is fully retracted. If we rule out the belt, then the limit switch is dirty or dry jointed, etc. Try cleaning the limit switch.Back again!

If it works, the tray should stay in, and the laser initiation sequence should start.
