Static with Marantz CDR-500 and CDR-510

I have a Marantz CDR-500 and 2) CDR-510. All produce static at certain points in certain songs and it is pretty consistent. There is static on both CD and CDR drive outputs. The components for left and right channel are the same but are done with separate components. That the distortion appears on both channels, means two units manufactured months apart, are exhibiting the same issue.

Elton John "Blue eyes"
01 seconds "Blue"
18 sec "On a"
27 sec "Blue"
39 sec "Morning"
46 sec "Far"
1:11 "Alone"

  • Lady Gaga "Enigma" when she starts singing at 4 seconds has the static.
  • Harry Styles Daydreaming" the opening has static

There is no static when used as a transport with an outboard DAC.

So I sent it to the repair guru who had a CDR-510 on hand. Once he was aware of the static, he could replicate it on his CD R-510 and was not there on his Denon CD Player nor did it occur in the headphone.

He pulled the main PCB and checked the output circuitry (including caps) and connectors with nothing found.

Any thoughts? Is this a design flaw or am I missing something?

Had another look. There are various BU4052 analog multiplexer/demultiplexer ICs switching signals. In hindsight SAA7324H can not be the cause (its DAC part is not used). Then either a BU4052, volume controle chip or DAC chip are the usual suspects. It would not surprise me that all have this phenomenon. Outdated in function and defective so loss of time.

I will verify headphone out is good.
I will ask him about defective DAC chip.
There is no volume on the CDR-500 or 510.
Is Elton John "Diamonds". But Hary Styles "My House" is a good recording as is Lady Gaga "Enigma" opening vocals. Mind you, it does nto reproduce static on anything else. Even Panasonic mini-system etc.

What is the statc like? Could you describe it in more detail?
Like when I hooked up a DAC to a tube amp / preamp somehow wrong and blew it up. Only much much less static. Voice is breaking up and also hear static on music.

At first I thought that what you wrote would seem to limit the possible causes quite a bit. However, after looking at the SM of the CDR500, I'm not so sure.
It looks like the headphones and the line outputs are NOT sharing the same DAC as one would expect.

The DAC used for the line outputs is sitting under the CD-drive. However, the headphone amp is getting its analog signal from other drive (the CDR-drive). I'm not absolutely sure as the SM only shows the schematics of the CD-drive and not the CDR-drive, but the block diagram seems to support my hypothesis.
