Subwoofer for Neumann KH420

Dear all
I am running a pair of KH420 in a heavily treated room of 23sqm. They are linearised by a Minidsp shd preamp. IN 2022, I built two vented subs with 60l and used the BMS 12S330 powered with a Crown XLS 2502. The sound is very clean and the bass goes low. However, it's not enough for HT or bass intensive music. Therefore, I am eyeing with 2 BMS 18n862 in a sealed box (>100l) positioned in the two back corners of the room. I could go up in diameter size up to 24" and 300l. Any other suggestions?

Cheers
Dave

The BMS 18n862 compares well with 21" drivers, and at ~91dB at 2 meters outdoors at 10Hz, I'd think a pair would be plenty below the KH420 and BMS 12S33 used indoors.

Have only heard good reports about the BMS 18n862, both ported or sealed.
I'd be more inclined to add more of them if needed rather than going with larger frame drivers.

Below is a simulation of the BMS 18n862 in a 150 litre sealed enclosure, with the addition of a 2nd-order 25Hz high-pass filter with Q=2.

The maximum displacement is about 14mm for 100W nominal input (re 8 ohms).

If we allow for a bit of room gain, then something like the following would be potentially achievable:

If we ignore room gain for the time being, and simply add a 4th-order 80Hz Linkwitz–Riley low-pass filter, together with a 470µF series capacitor, we get the following. The low-frequency cut-off is a lowish 26.3Hz.

Hi,

KH420 is said 26 Hz -3 dB and EQ by DSP if needed (also with autoo clib software).

Wonder if it is not more a room mode problem, then should ask not more Sd but more distributed (Gedlles) or relayouting of the room (sweet spot, loudspeakers placement) ?

Hi diyiggy

Thanks for your input - you are right, the KH420 are pretty flat below 30Hz in my room. As they are soffit-mounted, changing the position is not an option (and also not needed - positioning has been simulated). The BMS subs are more for fun to get the rumble e.g. while watching movies…
In the meantime I ordered the Lab Gruppen IPX2400 for powering the subs.

Maybe then you should think the subs as distributed bass à la Geddes for it to stay clean ?
Very goid devices you have : Neumann, labgrupen...🙂

I am more and more thinking about the kh120II + à 12" diy with dsp plate amp for EQ per channel for below 100 hz...
But still have a conceptual problem because the average quality if embeded ADC to DAC...
Are the DSPs inside EQ in analog domain or all is renumerized then EQ then ré DACed ?

Indeed, that’s the idea. The KH120 have no ad/da converter and are full analog devices (afaik). Only the KH80 and 750 have built in DSPs. However, they are fully transparent. If you are eyeing with the KH120, test the KH750 before deciding to go with diy

Sorry, my mistake - anyway, the ad/da conversion will be transparent (meaning, you will not hear any difference between running the KH via analog or digital input). But you will very much appreciate the advantages of modern DSP technology in terms of room correction and sound tuning. I have the KH120 and they are great (even without DSP)
