Replacement tweeter for Fostex PM0.5

Hello all, thanks for having me in the group.

I'm after some advice on replacing a malfunctioning tweeter on a Fostex PM0.5 monitor.

It's just a single tweeter on one of the monitors that isn't working. I've done some online searches to find a replacement tweeter but it's a minefield for someone with limited understanding on these issues such as myself. I've got so far as to figure out its .75" diameter & 30watts.

Would this work?

Any advice on which tweeter would fit/work correctly would be much appreciated .

Many thanks,

Jack

Thanks for your reply Dave.

I've done some online searching and previously found the website you've linked, along with a couple of others, which show the original Fostex tweeter. Non of them have it available to purchase so I assume it's now unavailable/discontinued.

I haven't removed the tweeter from the cabinet yet, I just recently got the speakers back after a 15 year absence. They were leant to my younger brother whilst I was living abroad and I think he's spent all that time driving hard loud drum & bass through them 🙄 (can't blame him).

I'll be removing it sometime next week when I get a chance on the small hope it might be a loose connection somewhere, but it sounds to me like its been driven to dust.

I appreciate what you say regarding replacing like for like, but if this isn't possible could you advise what technical details on a tweeter are vital for it to work? If I replace both tweeters in each monitor so they 'match' would that avoid any 'listening' issues?

Excuse my ignorance in these matters, I studied sound engineering & music production, but this deep dive into speaker mechanics is slightly above my pay grade!

But lead-insuggest sit is 25mm.

It is indeed a 25mm dome tweeter. Fostex

This is suggested: https://www.fullcompass.com/prod/175605-fostex-8578004000-tweeter-for-pm0-5-and-pm0-5-mkii

Replacing same with same saves dealing with a number of issues.

While that is an active speaker, you are absolutely right, it got a passive crossover, which is much more critical than an active one. I'm generally not a great fan of ferrofluid but exchanging the tweeter with a ferrofluid one likely makes it a lot easier to tweak the xo to a different tweeter. Though, if it's available, I'd suggest to get a Fostex replacement.

If you check the detail it says 20mm. The manuak sys 19mm, elsewhere it says ¾”

Their product page says it's a 25mm dome. And while it says bi-amp, it still got a capacitor in the HF circuit. I don't hold you responsible for it but Foster/Fostex is known for incorrect data sheets and changing products without notice. Fostex built amazing drivers but I won't swear on it since they'd f'd up the data on a LOT of drivers in the past. It's one of the worst companies to get reliable specs on past or even current drivers.

Same data sheet says both 25 & 20mm so a mistake somewhere.

sigh Yeah, that's what's expected from Fostex. 🙁

After OP opens up the box we will have a better ideamof what is what.

The funny (okay, it's actually sad) thin is, they don't even label their drivers appropriately. I really, REALLY love Fostex drivers (esp the 83 ones as mid driver) but I cannot fathom why they are making such a smokescreen on what drivers they are actually using or why they drop amazing drivers from their portfolio. I'm really frustrated by that!

It shouldn't matter if it's larger, 25 vs 20, not much anyhow. What's more important is the faceplate size and Jack's ability to adapt the crossover.

Indeed, the baffle step got a much larger magnitude on that. Whatever it is, Fostex is one of the worst brands to fix it, I've once tried to fix a 4-ch Fostex cassette recorder/mixer but it wasn't possible because Fostex would not send out ANY replacement parts outside of Japan. 3rd party vendors wanted 4x what the recorder/mixer costs - which would have been over 800€! I've instead ordered parts from china and tweaked the head amplifier a bit. I thought my friend would be happy about it but he then switched to digital recording instead. (Yes, that was the 90s, nobody remembers that anymore)
