Wanted to buy
Once you master SMD soldering, you have a whole new universe of parts to chose from.
It's not particularly difficult but you must get the knack of it.
A good advice I followed myself years ago is buy one of those 'SMD training kits' that float around on the 'net; just a bunch of parts and a PCB that doesn't do anything but lets you get up to speed with it quickly.

I never get down to below 1206 though. I know my limits!

There are several options for the power supply described in the LA article.
Start with a dual 24V SMPS followed by a circuit that converts this into a stable low noise +/-18Volt.
The Jung-Didden regulator does an excellent job.
But you could also use the LM317/LM337
