6S45 and 5842 - help needed

Hi folks, got a DAC with a pair of 6s45 and one 6z4 rectifier. The 6s45 tubes had a kind of unpleasant, cold and edgy sound in the beginning using Nordost Silver Shadow spdif cable. After a while when they got broken-in I replaced Nordost with a copper-based AES cable, the edge and unpleasantness were gone, but some sterility still remains.

Now I have an option to modify it for using the 6x4 rectifier and 5842 tubes. The mod will be done by the DAC designer. The question is if it’s worth it. I’ve never had any experience with WE 417 or 5842 stuff.

If you could point me in the right direction I’ll appreciate that.

Try to find an Audio Club in your area. Easier said than done.
Then see if you can get a member or two, that are willing to bring over their DACs so you can listen to them on your system.
And perhaps someone will bring a really good CD player to listen to as well.
Or, if a club member is willing, bring your DAC to play on a system other than yours.
Are cold, edgy, and sterility there or not?

If you have your DAC modified, what are the chances it will sound better?
If you have your DAC modified, what are the chances it will sound worse?
If you have your DAC modified, what are the chances it will have a new sound characteristic that you do not like?

What is the manufacturer and model number of you DAC?

A playback system has many components including amplifiers, speakers, and room. Some systems have positive synergy, some have negative synergy.

Hi 6A3, I really appreciate your feedback. I just talked to the gentleman, and he offered the best solution - after the mod the unit will accept both versions. I couldn’t ask for more. Now I feel happy. The DAC is a custom-made, not cheap, I just don’t want to hurt his business or something like that, especially when he’s a great guy, that’s why I don‘t want to mention his name.

The most interesting thing is that after trying a few very well-known expensive AES/EBU copper cables, I bought Mogami Platinum Studio with silver pin G&H plugs. This is my first Mogami cable, and it’s great.

Anyway, thanks again.

That is great! You can compare both versions of the DAC.
It is hard to find companies, big or small that deliver customer satisfaction . . . true customer service.
I understand keeping the DAC company name private.

On the other hand, if you can tell us about your preamp?, amplifiers, and speakers, . . .
It would be nice to hear about the rest of the system that plays together well.
Thanks!

Oh yeah, you’re absolutely correct, I still can’t believe that such great audio-folks exist, the guy just wants me to be happy.

As for my system - this one is not a secret 🙂, everything I have is based on my tinnitus, so the pieces are smooth and non-fatiguing -

Clearaudio Concept table with Ortofon 2M Black, Electrocompaniet EMC1-UP CDP, Bluesound Node 2 (soon to be replaced), BAT vk-55se tube power amp, BAT vk-255se solid state power amp, Audio Analogue Donizetti Anniversary power amp, BAT vk-42se solid state pre, Accuphase c2150 pre, Luxman cl-38uc tube pre and Acoustic Zen Crescendo speakers.

Both Luxman and BAT pres have built-in phono, but I’m mostly using Audio analogue AAphono outboard stage. I know it’s an overkill, but I really love to rotate my gear from time to time, it’s really fun 🤩
