I recently acquired a Thorens TD 160 Super turntable with a Grace 707 tone arm. My problem is with the tone arm VTA all the way down the tail is still too high. I have the cartridge shimmed and am using three mats right now to compensate but this seems pretty kludgey. I know this was a popular combination - has anyone else seen this problem and come up with any other ways of addressing it? The platter bottom is around 7mm from the top of the unit, which I believe is correct.
Thank you both for the feedback. I am assuming the quick adjust cam is the threaded piece with the 'arms' sticking out just above the tone arm board. I can see that giving me enough if removed - I will do some surgery tonight.
Yes, that's not needed.
In some cases you will have to drill a hole for the bottom of the lifter, if you lower the arm a lot.

Picture?
I did many (100s?) of those.
The 707s VTA is adjustable. A set screw (or 2) at the base allow the height to be adjusted.

Yep I know it is adjustable. Problem is I am bottomed out and the tail is still too high when the arm is down - by a few mm. I haven’t gotten a chance to work on it tonight but the cam removal idea seems like that will do it and then I can adjust VTA up a tad to get the headshell parallel with the platter if need be.
Remove the bit above the washer (love those washers) and the set screw.
That arm board looks unusual.
