... and put it in the closet. It works but is really only for nostalgia.
In its place I put the laptop (even though the shelf is too short to fully open the lid). I wanted to get the laptop off of the floor.
The system looks neater. 🙂

I took the cassette deck out of the rack about 25 years ago, and about 4 years ago added it back. The very last gasp 3 head dual capstan Sonys, Nakamichi, etc from the late 1990s and early 2000s are quite good. I have a Japanese market Sony TC - KA7ES which is quite nice. For serious tape I have a Studer A810. Most of my listening is digital these days, but I still play some vinyl. (More lately since I recently figured out how to get the audio into my ADC without totally compromising it. Yes, system is all DSP based and only reverts to analog at the power amplifiers.)
After some 30 plus years I completed my Nakamichi stack with DR2. It was my first "serious" stereo and I could only dream of affording that deck back when it was current. Actually I could forego further efforts into the audio field and concentrate on widening cultural horizons alas I decided to become a moron instead. It's a pleasure observing audio machinery at work and it's part of the reason tape decks and turntables will likely always be around.
Mine is a decent Sony TC-KE400S from 1997. I replaced the belts and pinch roller a decade ago. The main issue was that I had gotten rid of nearly all of my tapes because they were in poor condition. I have some blank Maxell XLIIs that have damage at the beginning of the "B" side from being in storage for 20 years.

I still own a hard-earned Tandberg TCD330 for sentimental reasons. I love the look and the sound.
Those were the days we recorded cassettes to play them in the car on a nice Clarion system.
I still have about 200 of them, TDK's and Maxell's...

I owned a AIWA AD-F990 too. It was an amazing deck with most incredible look, feel and features.
I sold it a few years ago.
I remember having a walkman, I think it was Sony, that had a cassette with a receiver build in.
One needed to insert that cassette to listen to radio. IIRC...

Haha, I just put my old Harmon-Kardon TD292 in the rack. It had been in storage for at least 10-15 years and I was wondering what it would sound like on my reference system.
It powers up (always a good sign) and winds and rewinds some old tapes, but when you hit play it stops (as if at end of tape; which it is not).
Probably something to look at in the new year. We'll see.

I am down to three decks right now. Two JVC, one Technics. Unfortunately nice Onkyo was so warn out, had to dismantle it.
While they can not keep up with better signal sources, they provide great background music. I keep them purely for nostagia and looks. The display is just a pleasure to look at.
I have my tapes somehow organized, likely more than thousand, and will keep them around. I know where blue grass tapes are, where christmass tapes are, where jazz is...

Background music, hey, that’s how I view CDs. 😬. I was in the exhibit with Mapleshade eons ago, he had gotten a hold of the beautiful Nakamichi Dragon CD system, transport + DAC, both isolated on sub Hertz platform. When a CD was inserted into the transport a very good vacuum was formed inside the transport compartment. That sound wasn’t chopped liver.
