SB Acoustics SB10PGC21-4 on OB

Has anyone tried this? The Qts is quite high, so that’s good. I’m thinking of putting it on a 12” or 18” wide by 72” long baffle, the driver positioned at approximately 40”, my ear height above the floor while sitting. How low could I expect it to go?

By itself? No woofer support?

Then, no. Unless you like elevator music. 🙂

On OB, it will never reach that 89Hz. More like 150Hz, and that will be taxing it.

Better put it in a small sealed enclosure. Could be ok to 100Hz, then add subs.
Still won't have much slam, we are talking about a 4" driver after all.

I use a small SB Acoustic driver in my Modified CBT24 arrays. It is the SB Acoustic SB65WBAC25-4 which is 2.5" diameter full range driver but I using 24 drivers per side in my arrays. The small drivers are in a sealed box and crosses over to subwoofers below 125 Hz. I'm very pleased with the performance of these speakers.

The SB65 is a wonderful driver... almost extends like a tweeter up high. High enough for my older ears for sure!
Amazing on strings, woodwinds and percussion.

You have 24 units sealed, and still crossing at 125Hz.
So, yeah, a single one (SB65 or SB10) on OB won't do much. 🙂

I’m seeing sealed box performance a bit better (not accounting for driver volume or stuffing)
6.7 litres qtc 1 = f3 76hz , f10 50hz
2.8 litres qtc 1.1 =f3 80hz , f10 55hz
1.7 litres. Qtc 1.2 =f3 85hz f10 60hz
so 2 or 3 litres stuffed should give decent performance albeit limited volume and a touch of boom in the bass.
probably wont need baffle step

What's your listening distance, and intended SPL?

I can imagine a 4" full-range OB just about working in a desktop situation. The fig-8 pattern would dramatically reduce side-wall reflections, and will probably give very sharp imaging.

Outside of low-SPL and nearfield, I'd be looking at 12" drivers or larger. Maybe 10"s if they have plenty of excursion and/or you use multiples.

I'd go with a 6" or 8" minimum, but I am a registered bass head.
That size, you have very limited seating area, and now the issues of a whizzer if you are against those.
I found 8" is 1 pair of ears at 7', 2 pair at 12' if shoulder to shoulder at 12'

I didn't have much bass from a heavily eq'd 8" with it at eye level in a big room, me out in the open, beyond 7'.

But if you stick to not much below a cello, you may be ok.

A 12" worked for me, eq'd down the 1-4khz lift present in manufacturers measurements present in 30 degrees off axis, boosted the highs, and had the seating area basically completely slightly off axis, worked great for couch wide 8'+ away.
