If this is primarily a mid and high frequency application, what is the purpose in the spiral shape? It makes sense in a Cornu to extend the length of each sector but is it needed here? Has it been made this way because the straight sided one was patented years ago?

It would seem it's only benefit is that it could be used in applications where it is positioned horizontally to spread sound out into 360 deg.
Oh? There's no requirement in the patent process that the invention has to work or do anything useful. It has to be novel, non-obvious, and reproducible by someone skilled in the art. That's it. 🙂Another patent you've got to wonder how they managed to get through...

I know -I've posted almost those exact words myself many times. My point is that it doesn't appear to be novel or non-obvious, just another minor variation on existing ideas / practice they've somehow gulled a patent examiner into believing, probably by some linguistic sleight of hand (or the latter didn't do much research).
An yet it's reminiscent of many impellers I've seen in various types of air/fluid handling units........
Yes, i just saw a turbocharger rebuild and it 2 of those (different sizes).

Okay, that's it, I'm breaking out the foam board.
Good thing I still have about a half a kilometre of it. 😉

I believe this to be a multi purpose item. When not being used for music, you fit a little fan in it, paint a spiral on the bottom, hang it over the grandkids crib and watch it spin. They will be mesmorised and you in turn get that much needed nap.
That could be. Derivative work happens quite a bit so maybe they were able to shoehorn it in that way. Or maybe the USPTO just took the money and issued a patent. My point is that it doesn't appear to be novel or non-obvious, just another minor variation on existing ideas / practice they've somehow gulled a patent examiner into believing, probably by some linguistic sleight of hand (or the latter didn't do much research).
Actually... How about using a stepper motor and driving it to the beat of the music at varying speeds/directions. You could get some pretty trippy effects. Get those grandkids spun up before you hand them back. 🙂When not being used for music, you fit a little fan in it, paint a spiral on the bottom, hang it over the grandkids crib and watch it spin.
