given that car amplifiers have already a gain pot can i add a resistor divider at the input?
gain is too hi and i need about 6-8db attenuation when the gain is all the way down.
input impedance is 10k.

Reducing the gain seems more correct. Of course you should tell brand and type if you gamble on a random reader that has the same device and maybe has changed this peculiarity. A picture of the PCB would help too.

That's a large early 90's AB amplifier, 2x300W. Preamp output voltages were typically 500mV at the time.
What output voltage are you using?
