10cm depth. Is that a good middle ground for diffusing hf & mf?
Id like to use up oak stair case spindles I'll no longer install. Max length would be 10cm x 4cm x 4cm.

Should be ok from 1700hz to 4300hz.
With 15cm you are ok circa 1khz which is 'better' in my view.
Your initial idea might be a good compromise however, it depends of your ceiling height and listening position: you need 3x lower wavelength of interest for diffusor to perform as expected.
So if 2,4 meter ceilling height it'll be ok from 1,8m and below.
This calculator gives you pattern, the different cell length and numbers of them and total length needed, handy tool ( you need 7,5m total length for one tile):
