It's Time to End Horse Drawn Tourist Rides

I am not sure I understand…..
What is the problem here? The fact that some of the horses die while “working”? Pulling the carriages around town? Or because of those tourist/carriages rides the traffic will be affected?

Of course it's the abuse needs to be stopped. I thought that was pretty clear.

There are lots of uses of horses that are perfectly fine. In fact, very good for the horses giving them a sense of purpose and even affection.

Here is just one great example with the King's Guard in London.

Quite a contrast between the example in my first post and this one.

Similar to another post I started about abuse of horses in the racing industry, here is a similar and perhaps even worse situation.

These horses used for tourist rides lead a terrible life and this industry also should be banned.
So? Regulate the crap out of it - like every other danged thing. Make the
penalties very high. If the problem continues, THEN ban it. BTW I used to
own a horse and they are pretty great animals.

I don't see regulation as a practical solution to the problem of abusing horses by having them pull tourist carriages around in NYC.

And apparently from Galu's post above neither do major cities around the world who have banned the practice altogether.

The purpose of The Lounge is claimed to be ... "A place to talk about almost anything but politics and religion."

And if you look at all the various topics introduced in The Lounge there are very few that deal with electronics. That subject is dealt with extensively throughout the rest of the forum.

Here are some of examples of just a few of the many non-electronic subjects currently being discussed in The Lounge:
  • What is The Meaning of Life
  • The food thread
  • Wordle
  • The Weather
  • Fake Paypal Scam
  • Shoelaces
So I don't see how the mistreatment of horses, a rather serious subject, is any different from these or any less applicable to The Lounge.

This will likely end up being a political thread as (you know this) the subject has the interest of radical people too. We get beat every single day about the need to eat vegan, animal abuse, gender confusion, LHBTQI etc. and those items are literally pushed in all media in Europe. You just can't escape it and this while you don't abuse animals etc. at all. It is refreshing to have a technical forum without social justice. Efficiency of addressing world citizens with local habits that are plain wrong is low too. Better solve local problems locally and change the sick culture of (allowing) animal abuse. Global approach usually makes life for those that treat animals with respect worse than before as people are fast with interconnecting issues and judgement.

Anyway go ahead.

The "Food thread" link: do you consume horse meat? Horse is the best friend of man after dogs. Do you consume dog meat? I just ask this because in my country one can find horse sausages (not very common, though), and I lived in an other country where horse meat was common at butchers. I hope this post is outside politics.

Technically there is not much wrong with horse meat (the animals generally had a good life, at least here). It seems that in the countries where horses are not abused their meat is consumed and vice versa 🙂 Human hypocrisy has no boundaries.

On second thoughts is the thread title too suggestive "It's Time to End Horse Drawn Tourist Rides" as there are places on the planet where horse drawn tourists rides are fine for horse, owner and tourists. It is time to end animal abuse and certainly the sick practices to uses animals in sports and betting should have ended long ago in any civilized country.

I happen to know a bit about Horses!

Consider the Day of the "White Horse" Final.... Bolton Wanderers v. WHU

1923 IIRC:

This superb White Horse, Billie, was all that stood between CHAOS and ORDER.

The game proceeded into a win for Bolton. WHU never disputed the result.

True Sportsmen.

It depends on how they are treated, in Bruges, with a long history of carriage pulled by horses for tourist, horses work 1 day in 3 at most (most work even less) and not during winter or extreme weather. They work 8 hours, but in reality half the time they are standing still. Bruges also bans cars mostly (and speed limit is at 30km/h at max) in the inner city. And when they get to old, they go to a "retirement farm" where they are mostly free in some fields, and sometimes carry very light cariages (a few times a month) because they like it.

But horses used in agriculture get way more work done, and they still do it here on some farms. The farmers keep them in good condition (good food and clean water, enough rest) as they are very expensive to buy. But the tradion of the Brabantic pulling horses like we call it (Belgian Draught is the name mostly used in the US) is still very alive in smaller and biologic farms here. And they are controlled very strickt by the goverment and animal rights organisations, and alsmost never they can complain. They actually are getting more and more used as tractors are not really good for the land due to their weight (compacting the soil). Big industrial farms off course don't do that, but smaller artisanal farms start using pulling horses and mules again more and more and do care about them.

But i know it's not everywhere. Many horses are abused and seens as a thing, not a living organism, and often die from that. Horse carriages in center NY where cars are still king and stressing the animals a lot, and pulling without breaks all day is not a good id, and that should be banned. Horses are very sensitive to stress from noise, and should only be used in quiet (or car free) envirroments like the historical centre of Bruges, not in the busiest inner cities in this world. And after every tour they get a break (at least 15min) there with food & water. Photo's are from internet, but show what i saw when i was a kid, raised in Bruges, and i know the 2 women here working with the carriages and horses.
