Hello!
I hope there's someone here willing and able to give advice:
Just having received a miniSHARC and Vol-FP kit incl. a 2x8 plug-in (at a good rate 😉) the usage idea is to use this as a 4-way xover. The DACs are located in the active 4-Way speakers, so two SPDIF cables carry the dig. signal to the speakers.
This requires two Stereo SPDIF outputs per side and the miniSHARC handily offers eight I²S outputs.
The remaining hurdle for me: How to/With which device convert the 8 I²S outputs to four SPDIF outputs?
I've searched for a converter and found some for one stereo SPDIF output, but investment for 4 such devices seems high and compatibility with miniSHARC looks questionable as well.
Please help me to find a solution here.
Thanks and regards,
Winfried

Hi PScal,
thanks a lot for sharing your implementation! It seems as if this device from Audiophonics may be what I need, i.e. four pieces for 2x 4-Way:
Interesting is that this is a transmitter only board, so no inputs are "wasted"!
So, I'm quite happy!
Thanks so far!

@ppp000
Hi!
Interesting thoughts, but the decision to put two Stereo DACs into each of the boxes was taken (between other reasons) because having four analog cables running to each box is optically even less appealing to me than having two digital cables. If I had the space, I'd even have considered to put a (mono) DSP board into each box, so only one dig. cable would run to the boxes, so DSP and DACs were "united" and could run from the same 24.576MHz clock source.
The I²S over HDMI idea is somehow intreaguing, but the Khadas Tone DAC boards I have seem to not offer I²S connectivity easily and I'm unsure if HDMI I²S runs over 5 meters without issues...
Thanks again for the considerations!

did this work well? I am looking at having 4 channels of S/PDIF outputs from a miniSHARC. That would require 2 boards from Audiophonics? Wonder if I can add an USB module like this as well? https://www.audiophonics.fr/en/inte...b-384khz-spdif-wm8804-to-i2s-dsd-p-14535.html

Hello Roger,
thanks for responding!
In the mean time my project was modified and I did not (need to) buy the Audiophonics boards:
I've decided to locate digital (miniSHARC based) 4-way x-overs and the DACs at the speakers (rear side), so I only have one (SPDIF) cable per speaker, and 4 short cables feed the 4 power amp boards (inside the speakers).
The miniSHARC based "preprocessor" (e.g. for Acourate based overall linearization) now has two BNC coax SPDIF outputs by using/adapting the two available SPDIF outputs of the Tentlabs masterclock/reclocker on the XO-3.2 (which I use as miniSHARC low phase noise clock upgrade). The preprocessor uses the openDRC 2x2 plug-in.
The 2 x-over processors are miniSHARC based openDRCs. And because the 2 Khadas Tone boards (each) fit into the cases, I can use the miniSHARC's SPDIF coded logic level signals (normally feeding the output transformers) and directly connect these to the DAC's logic level inputs. The x-over processors use the miniSHARC 2x8 plug-in, but implements only one 4-way chain per speaker (which provides more FIR Taps for each speaker).
This is where the concept stands. All this is not yet running because I'm building linear power supplies for the three DSP units, but I'm confident "we'll get there" 😊
