Things you have for sale.
Hi,

I´m selling a pair of used LB 8 MkII from EMS, France.
The drivers have a few optical marks and are optically not as new.
Technically perfect.
Basket voids have been filled with elastic damping material.
Price is 360€ for the pair, including shipment inside EU, and takes the visual imperfections into account.

All the best

Hi Mattes - the standard shipping isn’t as terrible as I had feared. So, if my maths is correct, €400-ish all up? I’m keen, but could you just confirm that these should be ok in an open (hanging) baffle between some AE dipole 18s and some RAAL dipole ribbons - I’m not being mad in thinking they should be a good fit, am I? Also, please let me know how I get the payment to you - are you able to receive payment via PayPal?

Hi jbm,

The standard shipping is not terribly expensive, but will need it´s time... express shipment is a lot dearer. That´s how it is, but 300€ express shipment simply makes no sense here.
Your math is fine, 400€ is OK, and I will pay paypal fees and insured shipping.

The EMS LB8 Mk II works very well in an OB, and can be nicely matched to the Dipole 18. That is precisely how I used them! I even tried them with a supertweeter, but preferred them without...
They were replaced by a pair of FERTIN ACOUSTICS 21M8EX fieldcoil drivers, even better, but much more expensive. Those have now been replaced with my own drivers, equally expensive, but I like them still better.

AE 18 dipole, despite its shortcomings (twice the Mms as advertised, so changed TSP and lower efficiency), is still a very valid choice and provides deep bass, while on the other side has no problem meeting an 8" FR at 300Hz or so. Just last week I replaced them with a FERTIN ACOUSTICS WLA46EX fieldcoil driver (at 4 times the price...) which looses a little bit of deep bass, but offers more precision in the upper bass and lower mids. Compromises in speaker design, as always...
But if you´re not willing to pay several thousands of Euros, the EMS and the AE are generally a good choice. I preferred the EMS over Tangband, Visaton, Fostex and Seas drivers of equal size.

Just please be aware of the fact that this pair of EMS LB8 has optical issues, mainly from the backside, as per photos and description (which are the reason for the relatively low price), which of course will be visible from behind open baffles. Technically they are perfect and will make a good match with the Dipole 18 (oh, have my pair for sale as well should you be interested... as well as other FR drivers, digital sources, amps... just am too lazy to write nice ads...).
A passive CO is possible, and from my experience, 300Hz is a point where both drivers integrate nicely with a good balance of dynamics, soundstage size and so on. Just don´t make the EMS baffle too big, and avoid diffraction as far as possible.

Finally, I have to admit that I have no experience with the RAAL tweeters and can´t give any hints on proper integration. For me, I would try a pretty high CO point first, using the RAAL as supertweeter above 8khz or so, in order not to destroy the EMS integrity across the treble band, but that´s just a guess...

All the best

Mattes - thanks for this! Some very useful insight. I just took a look at your hanging dipole ‘flower’ setup, which looks beautiful (with a sound to match I expect) and several orders of magnitude more aesthetically pleasing than mine. Suffice to say I’m not overly concerned about the backs of the drivers.

I’ve just put some Lowther DX2 in (FR drivers are somewhat scarce and $ here), and have the CO to the Raals pretty close to 8k, but I haven’t tried the AE 18s as high as 300. I will do that, so thanks for that info.

I’m intrigued when you say your own drivers…? I’m sure I’ll find your EMS drivers a good change from the Lowthers, which I can’t yet make my mind up about.

Please let me know the best email to send the € to you - I’m not sure if my email is visible to you, so let me know if I should PM you if you’d prefer to send an invoice.

Hi jbm,

I don´t have too much Lowther experience (never really liked the cheaper ones and only occasionally listened to more expensive models), but I´m quite sure that EMS LB8 MkII will compare nicely against a DX2. Of course, much depends on implementation, filters and so on.

If you´re having the RAAL from around 8khz, you may consider a FERTIN ACOUSTICS 21 WLA as well, which has a very well controlled upper end and allows easier integration with the tweeter. Of course, that´s a totally different price region... and of course I have business interests in these drivers, as I´m the international distributor for FERTIN ACOUSTICS. However, the driver is here

https://guentherengineering.com/21wla

Please allow to point out that the EMS is a private sale, not a business sale.

My own drivers are the fruit of 3 years of work and will appear on my website soon, I hope I´m allowed to add a picture. They´re in small scale production and are expensive. Of course I´m willing to share more info should you be interested.

Please send a PM with an email contact, and I will answer per mail for all necessary info exchange.

Thanks in advance and all the best

Mattes
