New 15" Subwoofer Design Help

Hi,

I've built a few diy subwoofers with good results. I uploaded a pic of one I built. I want to build one more with a 15" driver for more output. I listen to mostly music and some HT. I love tight bass with no distortion. I also am into wood working so I can make any size box and have room for a nice size sub. I did want to go ported. I'm really lost on drivers and was wondering if someone could help steer me to a great 15" driver for a home subwoofer. I have a bridged amp putting out 625w at 8 ohms but may decide to go with a more powerful class D power amp. First I'll try what I have. When I called Parts Express they suggested this driver: https://www.parts-express.com/Adire-Audio-ADBR15D2RA-Brahma-15-XBL-DVC-Subwoofer-294-116?quantity=1 My budget is around 500.00 for the driver.

Any help is appreciated.

Greets!

Sorry, don't keep up with driver offerings, but there should be plenty to choose from depending on the desired XO point/slope.

'Tight' bass/audibly low distortion typically requires sealed, (stuffed) TL, or if ported, well damped.

T/S max flat:

Vented net volume (Vb) (L) = 20*Vas*Qts'^3.3 = ~194 L

Vented box tuning (Fb) (Hz) = 0.42*Fs*Qts'^-0.96 = ~21 Hz

F3 = Fs*0.28*Qts^-1.4 = ~19.6 Hz, though with a damped 7" dia. x 27.13" long vent sims ~ 26 Hz/2pi

This alignment when critically damped (QL = 2) will technically meet your needs up to the THX 120 Hz XO point/>2nd order, but down this low the room dominates, so may wind up needing the vent stuffed to 'taste'. 😉

Sims handling the full 1 kW from ~20 Hz - up/2pi

If wanting a higher XO point, then a driver with a lower inductance is ideally required/desirable.

I personally don't bother with ports anymore unless it's for a high sensitivity setup. Passive radiators are the way to go as long as you tune nice & low (17hz or something unnecessary sounding like that). That gives a little extra extension, no port noise, and the group delay is horrible of course, but only at frequencies way below any musical content. I consider properly set up PR systems to be "sealed-plus". Of course PRs cost money....so maybe nevermind?😅

The Brahma is clearly a beast, but I've have trouble getting power to it that wouldn't blow breakers...do you have a dedicated 20 amp breaker available just for this sub and an amp to match? If so, go nuts!🤘

Edit: is your amp stable at 4ohms in bridged mode? Do you know if it's output increases with a reduction of impedance?
