I have some Woden Lance with FF85wk and want to move to something larger in the Baby Lab series. (but open to other suggestions)
The budget for a driver is up to $50ea and looking for some options. It's for near-field, 6' away and it's a 2.1 chip amp with a voxel sub.
I don't see the MA 6.x series anymore.
Going up to the FF105wk does not seem like it would be much of a change.
That leaves the CHN-70 and the Pluvia 7 - Can someone compare them and explain to me the "Japanese" tuning I saw mentioned? Not sure that is something I'd like if I'm reading it right.
The Storm Shadow just says Pluvia 7 - Is Pluvia 7 PHD the right one?

If you're not interested in rolled off highs, go for Pluvia 7HD. It's a great all-rounder fullrange, and in your price range from Madisound.

The Pluvia 7PHD has the softer treble.

They kinda dropped the ball on nomenclature with these. 😀
I don't know about the specific Woden requirements/limitations. Dave or Scott will need to let you know about that.

I have the last of the A6.2m.
At that price P7HD is a bargain, no BabyLab for that, nut maybe there should be.
P7PHD ia very much voiced like the CHN-70, a voicing for the Japanese market, with many not liking them.
Note that both FF85wk and A5.2/3 exceed $50.
FF105wk gets you a tiny bit lower bass but slightly less fidelity above that. Otherwise they are very similar.

What don't people like about them? I see in another thread you said "prominent midrange".
Is the p7phd the right speaker for the Storm Shadow?
Are any of the FE103 options close enough to SOL for the Shrike?
Anything else to consider besides the Baby Labs for near field? They need to be somewhat easy to build.
Edit: My budget can stretch to A-7MS.

Search out XRK’s raising of the CHN-70, Bare doesn’t have good things to say.
We did a microTower Castle with CHN-70eN, they have aglorious midrange, but it is decidely prominent.

FWIW, over the ~2.6 decades on the forums I've noticed that a significant number of folks prefer somewhat sibilant responses that help with both speech, music intelligibility/crispness, though not really knowing it per se, so by now having read basically this same query for all the BW sections dozens, if not hundreds, of times, recommend we just post this interactive chart to let folks teach themselves how to interpret a response plot based on one's own perception since we all hear the same, yet not so much.
The two Pluvia factory response plots are clearly different above 5 kHz. The reader can interpret for themself. It’s good to have options!
Yes, well aware.....and yet historically many can't or not sure they're interpreting them rightly, hence my suggestion. Indeed! It's one of the main problems nowadays for the beginner/amateur DIYer!

There are 3 4” Pluvias, and they are pretty different.
Pluvias 7 is/was a lower definition driver, P7HD (metal cone) a development the Alpair 7.3, the P7PHD (paper) is voiced for the Japanese market with an exagerated midband.

Right. I'll do the 7HD and 7P-HD as those are the current models.
The original Pluvia 7 didn't hang around for very long; when the 7MS was launched they took the opportunity of using about 70% of the old Alpair 7.3 components in a new basket to create the 7HD. The 7P-HD doesn't share quite as many components (different cone for a start) but still has some; it was done mainly with Norio's (Japanese distributor) requirements in mind.

Like an early Christmas present. I like how easy the Baby Labs are to build. It's nice to have another option with available drivers
I'm still looking for a full-range project. Is the new design for the P7HD still in the works?Ah. Yes. My memory not being what it was...
I'll get onto it over the weekend.
