Looking to make a passive input selector for multiple RCA inputs into a single preamp input. Would like 4 input selections. I just dont understand the nomenclature enough to select a good switch on my own. If someone has a link to an acceptable switch I would appreciate it.
The preamp is mono or stereo? If mono you need 1 pole, if stereo 2 poles, and the number of positions equal or larger than inputs. I suggest leave one or two extras unused for futures upgrades.
I really need it to be passive and a stand alone switch box.You might consider a relay-based system instead. There are lots of cheap selector switch kits on the bay. You can replace the capacitors with name-brand, and install Omron telecoms relays with gold-flashed contacts.

The Grayhill Series 71 are another excellent choice. I used them for many projects.
Here's one example of a 2 pole, 4 position with gold contacts.

Yup, Grayhill is usually a very good choice. Switches that are not open to the atmosphere are my first consideration. Contact surfaces are also important to me. Finally, I find it easier to get a "D" post for the knob and be done with it, rather than to have one of those 'one size fits many' attempts, split in the middle, and sometimes breaks off, leaving you with no choice but total replacement.
It might also be important to have a 'make before break' type so as to avoid the popping that happens in some circuits.

my favorite part is the ELMA 04
Hi,
I'm building a gainclone amp, and I need a rotary selector to switch between sources. I have three inputs to the amp, and I bought one of these:
Rotary Switches : Rotary Switches : Maplin Electronics
I got the 4-pole 3-way one and that's fine, but will this switch do for audio?
Can you recommend something else I can use for this purpose? This is my first attempt at something like this and I'm not sure if this switch will work or not, I'd like to be sure before I solder everything up.
Thanks,
