Firewire from pc or laptop to Pioneer VSA AX10i

hi all could anyone tell me would it be possible to send a FireWire signal from a pc to my pioneer vsa ax10i ilink inputs thus using it as a multichannel power amp with remote control of volume for a 3way active speaker build using the pc for crossover and eq etc ? also why are there 2 ilink or FireWire ports on the pioneer ? many thanks James

Back in the early years of HDTV, some recorders, tuners and TVs used Firewire for video connections, so that's a possibility. Or it may have been for connecting to miniDV or Digital 8 camcorders. You'd have to study the manual to find out what the receiver's ports can do.

Apart from that, I suspect the only discrete surround inputs will be line level, for use with SACD or DVD-Audio players, or outboard surround decoders from some possible new surround format. S/PDIF inputs will only do 2-channel PCM, lossy Dolby Digital, or DTS. You might get good enough sound if you can persuade the PC to encode audio at full bitrate DTS (that's 4 times the bitrate of Dolby Digital on most DVDs).

thanks the firewire ports were originally to receive surround sound music directly from the sacd or DVD player to be decoded by the amp it was kind of a big deal when it launched I remember it coming out when I was a kid pi9neer called it ilink I think. as long as I send m7sic in a format the amp cam decode it should be fine shouldn't it ?

A quick search found this and many more.

I remember a firewire PCI card ad, where the IO card was more complex than many PCs of the day. So I thought TI must be managed by Rube Goldberg. I actually have a PCMCIA card with firewire for an old laptop, both now pretty much useless as well as the "digital" tape camcorder. Early Bluetooth was dreadful, but I think such is the future. IE no cords, no media, no dedicated "sound system", and minimal (~2.1) speakers. And perhaps no keyboard or mouse, just "Computer(~Alexa), play me (whatever)".
