Hi all,
Does anyone think that old school 12v 10amp plus "car" battery charger transformers are good for anything?

YES!! Charging car batteries!!old school 12v 10amp plus "car" battery charger transformers are good for anything?
The new-school switching chargers won't try to charge a flat-dead battery, and most are too complicated for their price so die young.
I think they would run 12V car amps rated at 6A or so without an issue.
Depends if it is a plain old transformer / rectifier, or something complex.
Simple ones, as above, can be used as bench supplies as well.

I hear you but these are "for parts only" units. I do rather like my IGBT based chargers but you are correct that you sometimes have to at least surface charge a battery to use them.YES!! Charging car batteries!!

for low wattage single ended power amps (14VDC supply voltage) - but you need two good electrolytics and a choke.Hi all,

P.S.: concerning a new school battery charger I want to find out the actually manufacturer - go to

The biggest problem with those transformers is the noise. You’re likely building low power class A amps and such, so the music isn’t going to be that loud. But the transformer will be - most of them can be heard across the room with the TV on. Fine for proof of concepts and getting started in electonics, though.
