Years back was on flight from Pisa to London. There'd been bad weather, takeoff was delayed till after dark. Took off and as plane was climbing there was a single fork of lightning a short distance away and I got to see it leave the clouds above and strike the ground below. There was a perceptible time between the two.
No chance to photograph, but the memory is strong. It was quite beautiful.
