So I have these speakers and through the years the panel makes the snapping sound when driven past the limit on bass notes. the issue is though that the other speaker in pair doesnt have the problem, at least not at the same loudness level. Other than that they sound great. Now I have had these speakers all apart and fixed delamination and also rewired the tweeters. So i do not think it is a delam issue. Any experts that know about how to go about fixing this issue. I'm capable of dis-assembly.
I'm afraid there's not much you can do about that. It seems you've stretched the mylar on one speaker a bit more than the other.
Turn the volume down and/or limit low frequencies. Those are your solutions. 🙂
Dave.

I had my panels rebuilt at magnepan last year and this included replacement of the mylar material. For the first time I have panels that do not misbehave.
You would have to give them a call.
For my Smgas I had the removed from the frames and no xo. It was 500 to have the panels remanufactured.

Davey, I wonder if the hair dryer trick would work on the mylar, I know mylar will shrink, but not sure about the glue and wires, what are your thoughts?
Don’t worry about it. Mylar will melt at 260 degrees Celsius. Hot air from a hairdryer will never reach temperatures like that….. unless you stick the dryer very close to the film.

It’s 12.5 microns as far as I know. Mylar is a very tough material, and it takes a bit of abuse to actually damage it.
I’ve repaired quite a few Magnepans and never worried about it. No mishaps either.

I think you will agree it is not a repair which can be done by anybody.
It is thin film, stretched in a frame using special equipment.

Repairing or replacing the Mylar film is not something you should attempt. Totally agree with you there. Fixing delamination issues or even replacing the wire or foil is fairly simple to do.
