I have recently acquired a Victor TT 81, and mounted it in an experimental plinth with my diy radial TA.
I had good fun making it work with help from some members of the forum after transport damage.
It is promising.
The platter is aluminium and the mat is old and tired, needs replacing, but by their nature they are all going to be old and brittle, what is the best diy or new oem solution please? The platter rings on its own and is controlled by the mat i believe. The matt is 5mm thick.
Anyone else with experience of this TT?

I bought a 5mm Herbie's mat for my SL-1200 years ago now. I also use it on my LP12. Sounds great!

Or if you want it really cheap buy some 3 or 5mm cork mat and cut it to size I bought 1m already made 2 and have material left to do another 4 all for £6

Thanks everyone, as i understand it the mat is there to couple the record/disc to the platter to ensure the stylus to spindle link is rigid as well as avoiding/removing resonances etc. How do the softer materials in this group succeed in that aim please? - or are they relative to that aim in fact effectively rigid. By the way, i may well purchase an achromat, i just want to try as best as i can to understand what i am doing here before spending money, so interested to benefit from peoples knowledge and experiences.Or if you want it really cheap buy some 3 or 5mm cork mat and cut it to size I bought 1m already made 2 and have material left to do another 4 all for £6

Interestingly to me, i mounted the TT unit in a lighter top plinth on spikes down to the massive lower one and this has further opened out the sound and differentiation of instruments. Having lived with and measured this set up for a while now it is clearly better to listen to with the TT81 mounted in a light stiff top plinth which rigidly couples it to the arm base, than both mounted in a massive rigid plinth, also rigidly coupled. There is better distinction between notes and delivery of detail. the light stiff plinth is mounted on spikes.Interestingly to me, i mounted the TT unit in a lighter top plinth on spikes down to the massive lower one and this has further opened out the sound and differentiation of instruments.
Now considering adding POM to this platter, does anyone have experience if the motor will be ok with that?
