"Nanofrazor" cuts tiny single with first 25 seconds of “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree”
https://arstechnica.com/science/202...f-worlds-smallest-christmas-record-in-stereo/Physicists at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) are bringing the Christmas cheer by using a 3D nanolithography tool called the Nanofrazor to cut the smallest record ever. The tune they "recorded," in full stereo no less: the first 25 seconds of "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree." "To read the groove, you need a rather costly atomic force microscope.."
Quite amazing, and I've been motivated to look futher into the technology involved! 😎
The process is thermal scanning probe lithography, in which a thermally sensitive resist is sublimated using an ultra-sharp heated tip.
The comparison of the written and target patterns during writing, in such a way that the parameters can be immediately adjusted, is called closed-loop lithography.
It's all made possible by the NanoFrazor®. https://heidelberg-instruments.com/product/nanofrazor-explore/
